San Sebastian - Caves and Bus
I posted the caves part of this under another topic but given no response, decided to try again with newer questions. The expertise in the "Use San Sebastian as the hub?" thread has been influential in planning our 10 days in Bilbao and San Sebastian. For example, we dropped plans for a car. Given some issues below, we're reconsidering - hope the experts can once again help.
Bus (Madrid airport to Bilbao): There seems to be just one bus per day from Madrid airport to Bilbao. It of course leaves 15 min before we land. When I try the Madrid airport -Santander airport pair in ALSA, nothing happens when I click "search." This also happens when I try the Santander airport - Bilbao combination. Do neither of these routes exist any longer?
Bus (Caves of El Castillo): One thing we really want to see is the Caves of El Castillo in Puente Viesego. That is doable by bus from Bilbao, but would take our only full day in the city. We have more days in San Sebastian, but the bus from there takes longer and is not as convenient for a day trip to the cave. Questions for the experts: 1. Does renting a car for a day in San Sebastian to get to the cave make sense? 2. Is it feasible to hire a car and driver to get to the caves? If so, can anyone recommend a company?
Thanks in advance.

Why don´t you take the bus from Madrid downtown to Bilbao? There are many daily.
El Castillo are nice caves, but probably not worth the effort. Being in the Basque Country, I´d forget about the caves in Santander and visit those in the Basque area.

Without knowing your itinerary it's hard to say if having a car would be best. For the Basque country there are lots of places that are difficult to visit without a car. However, if someone only has 5 days and plans to spend 1 in Bilbao and 4 in San Sebastian (for example)then in this scenario a car would be more of a hinderance.
The caves of Santimamine just outside of Gernika make a great visit. Literally across the street is the entrance to the forest of Oma - an enchanting place. You may be able to hire a taxi from Gernika for this specific destination.
