San Pietro or Santa Caterina

Kathleen,

When are you planning to go? I had decided on the San Pietro because I wanted to be in Positano. I contacted them, via email, back in February about when they would accept reservations for May 2002. Vito Cinque, the owner, told me to contact him in October. I thought I would double check about three weeks ago only to find them full for half of the nights I needed. I told him, via email, about the information he had given me back in February only to receive no apology. I know this is one of the top places on the Amalfi coast, that's why I started to plan so early. I am now staying at the Santa Caterina. Andrew is the person I've been in touch with. I believe he's the manager. He answers emails promptly and has been very helpful. As it turns out, Amalfi is closer to the train station we'll be using and Pasteum, which we plan to visit.

To answer your question, if you want to be in Positano, of course the San Pietro is closer, although you’ll have to use their shuttle in to town. If you’re in Amalfi, there’s a boat of some sort that goes to Positano. The Santa Caterina is just outside of town and they also have a shuttle.
The Santa Caterina is very beautiful, but not within walking distance of Amalfi or anything else!
San Pietro is gorgeous, but a few miles outside of the center of POsitano on the road to Amalfi.
Quite honestly, I wouldn't stay at either of these places unless you've got a car and/or you're content to stay at the resort.

Thank you all for the info. Wendy, we have also had a difficult time with reservations at the San Pietro. We are going in July and they were already booked during the time we are staying. Santa Caterina was very hospitable and even called my husband on the phone when we made an error. I think our main way of transport will be buses or ferrys. By the way, I completely agree about the Santa Caterina's website: it is incredible!

How about another hotel in Positano? We stayed at the Hotel Poseidon, and thought it was one of the best hotels we've stayed at anywhere, and we travel quite a lot. I just booked a room there again for next July, so I'm assuming that they still have others available. Any ?? feel free to e-mail. Good luck!
