We are traveling in Europe by train and don't currently plan to rent a car. We plan to be in Salzburg for 4 nights and Munich for 3 nights. We would like to see the castles (Neuschwanstein and Linderhof). Does it make more sense to only stay 3 nights in Salzburg and spend a night in Fussen on the way from Salzburg to Munich, or should we go on a day trip once we get to Munich?

Fussen is not on the train route from Salzburg to Munich. So, a day-trip to Fussen from Munich is in order. It's about 2 hrs. each way. Also, Linderhof is not near Neuschanstein. You would have to take a bus to transfer between the two. The Bayern Laender pass is 27 Euros and includes up to 5 people and their children for travel after 9:00 a.m and until 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. the following day on LOCAL TRAINS only. I don't understand how you intend to get to Füßen without passing through Munich if you are traveling by train.

I suppose it can be done, but the route would be round about.

you can check train schedules.

NB that the German spelling is Füßen.
You can get by with Füssen or even
Fuessen. Just make sure you don't use Fussen or you will not get what you want.

The u alone and the ü, a u with two dots over it, are different letters.

It is not easy to visit Linderhof without a car.

Lots of people do take the train and bus from Munich to see the castles in Fussen. This is one trip where having a car is a real plus.
You can take the back way from Fussen back to Munich to make stops at Wiesekirche, Oberammergau, Linderhof and Ettal Monastary.
As Economizer pointed out the Bayern ticket is a real bargain at 27€ for up to five people, however you have to go after 9am so that meanse getting to Hohenschwangau around noon at the very earliest.
How many of you are traveling? The car would cost you @100 for two days and driving there is easy once you get out of Munich. Contact Bob or Any Bestor at Gemutlichkeit Travel Gemut.com to get a good deal on a car.

I stand corrected! I think what led me off track was that I once entered Füßen into the DB website and got what I wanted, the rail schedule to the town near the castles.

Had I looked more closely, as I just did, I would have seen that Füssen was what came up on the schedule.

The system corrected my blunder. It was trying to tell me something, but I was more interested in writing down the departure times!!

Also, I should have known the plural for feet.
