Hi U,
Nocera inferiore is 20 km from Salerno.
It is accessible by train.
You could stay in Amalfi, Praiano or Positano and take the ferry or bus to Salerno.
For Ferry schedules Positano – Amalfi - Salerno (P.zza della Concordia):

Depending on what time of year you are going, you could find staying in places other than Salerno are real pain in terms of transport to Salerno.
And there are other reasons Salerno might appeal to you as well:

Tripadvisor is a good place to start and it has all budgets.
Have fun visiting your family!
