One hotel review I read said the Copenhagen area around the city's central train station is "seedy". There are several affordable hotels in this area, but is the area safe?

In spring 2014 our teenage son and I stayed at the Comfort Hotel Vesterbro, about a 5-minute walk from the central train station. We walked about the area comfortably (including at night) to restaurants and Tivoli Garden and never thought the area to be unsafe. The area is clean and we would not consider it "seedy" by traditional definitions. Is there something in particular that you are concerned about?

Vesterbro is one of the less affluent areas of Copenhagen, I don't think it is necessarily seedy, areas around train stations are sometimes a bit scruffy.

While the train station has retail shops serving commuters, the station is not in the center of the retail traffic area. To the east is Tivoli Gardens and to the west and south are big impersonal commercial, apartment, hotel, etc. buildings. After hours, what you see mostly are people coming and going to use the transportation from the main station. The lodgings along Vesterborogade would be more in the retail traffic area.
I have stayed near the station long time ago. What I did not like was that except for the Tivoli Gardens, it was far from everything else in the city center.

Norreport (Station) seems to be OK (and you can catch locals for
most anywhere on the north end of Sjaelland). There are 100's of bikes surrounding the station, very close to the pedestrian main avenue, The Stroget. Nothing at all qualifying as "seedy" in this particular part of Copenhagen. We've stayed near the "lakes" and it's a most pleasant walk to Norreport and the Stroget.

'Seedy' just means scruffy or cheap, not unsafe.

I'd go so far as to say there are virtually no 'unsafe' areas in European city centres, certainly around the major stations. Although it always pays to be aware of your surroundings in any busy area.

Vesterbro has a street of porn shops or used to and is rumored to be a red-light district but that is just one main street and it may have gentrified by now.

OK, I suggest you consider staying in the hotel Nimb which is attached to Tivoli and is directly across the street from the station..Cheap and seedy it definitely isn't.

That "seedy" TA report probably also said that rooms were "dated" and staff was "rude." Read between the lines.

We stayed at Best Western Hebron which is a short walk to train station. We had one of their rooms with newly refurbished bathroom and the room was lovely as well and it was huge! Very nice breakfast.

I have walked through much worse stretches of cities for sure. We felt perfectly ok walking even at night.

At a fraction of the price of The Nimb, too!

We also stayed at Best Western Mercur. It was a bit further a walk to the heart of things, but it was also quite nice with a good breakfast. Ask for a room facing the tennis courts here, to be away from noise of the trains.
