Safe to bring jewelry onboard

Hi all,

In March 2016 I cruise on NCL's Epic from Barcelona and brought my engagement ring onboard. I had it on safe but when my
husband open the safe he might have dropped it on carpet of our stateroom. They have said that the cleaning crew always return things left behind. So I am guessing the next cruisers that came onboard took the ring with them and not reported to the ship since I reported the ship admin inmediately. Is there an insurance liable in ship for this type of situation? Or is there a place where cruisers can report their lost items for other cruisers to have access and help retrieve the lost items?

The cruise ship is not liable, and won't have insurance because of that.

You may have insurance on your ring, or travel insurance or household contents which may cover it.

A cleaning crew will have been through your room before the next guests came onboard. The next guests are extremely unlikely to have found your ring.

You could try the cruise critic forum but I think you have to accept your ring has gone.

YOU didn't insure the ring? The cruise ship doesn't carry insurance for passengers' personal possessions. That's your responsibility.

Many household contents insurance policies cover loss of personal goods outside the house. As others are pointing out, you lost the ring and it's a matter for your insurance.

This is the (I think) the 3rd time you've posted about this. The other entries have been deleted so I guess Fodors thinks it really isn't relevant to anything much.

Your ring is probably gone for good. However, did you phone Norwegian? That seems to be better than email. Also, by regular mail, did you send a picture of the ring and other information about it. Putting everything in writing the old fashioned way is recommended by some cruise lines. I also read that it may take several weeks for information to be matched up with lost items, so keep trying with the cruise lines. I don't know if they allow you to offer any kind of reward. Probably would not help, but you can ask.

Did you post on the Norwegian Face Book page? Very slim possibility, but you never know if some other cruiser has posted there, hoping to find you. So, search that carefully, way back as far as you can.
Look at cruisecritic to see what other cruisers recommend.
Posting on travel websites like Fodors is not likely to help

So sorry your ring is lost. Of course, all kinds of advice now about insurance, prevention, etc. and plenty of blame to yourself, husband, ship's crew, etc. Please don't do that to yourself. Things happen. We all make mistakes, even costly ones, but you are alive and I hope well, so try to focus on having a happy marriage.

<A cleaning crew will have been through your room before the next guests came onboard. The next guests are extremely unlikely to have found your ring.>

Are cruise ship cleaning crews that much better than hotel ones? Because over years of frequent travel I found all kinds of things in hotel rooms that were left behind by guests and overlooked by cleaners. No diamonds, though, lol.

Anyway, it's all speculation, the ring is gone, and as everyone has said, your own insurance, whatever it may be, is your only hope of reimbursement.

And for god's sake, wouldn't it have been safer on your finger?? My SO had a habit of taking his watch off to wash his hands and lost a few cheap watches that way. When he got a good watch or two, he stopped doing this.

NewbE, you are right about the cleaning. I read a story where after a cruise, a woman found a dress in her luggage that did not belong to her. Her husband had made a last minute sweep through the closet and packed things he found, including the dress. It had obviously been left by a previous passenger, but the woman had not noticed it during the cruise. If the steward saw it, it must not have registered as being lost. Makes you wonder how long it had been there.

Your homeowner's insurance should cover it unless it's a very expensive ring and you didn't put a special rider on your jewelry.

And agree that I take my rings off only to shower (so they don;t slip off from the shampoo) and always leave them on my nightstand - never in the bathroom so they can't fall into anything.

>>> Or is there a place where cruisers can report their lost items

Many cruise company web sites have just such page. If you google search "ncl lost and found" you will be pointed to such page.

>>> Is there an insurance liable in ship for this type of situation?

Unless you have an insurance rider specifically covering this case, insurances don't just pop up to cover you.

If you dig the document you agreed to when you booked your cruise, you would have had to agree to something like this:

<i>..shall not be liable for any loss or theft ... jewelry, gold, ... or precious stones</i>
