Safe, cheap place to stay in Old Town Prague for 2 nights

3 adults traveling to Prague for first time, English speaking, need a room for 3, preferably in the Old Town area. Looking for something close to the $120-150/night range, or less if possible. Have looked over the livingprague site and though it is great, the comments about areas to avoid in this area are a bit scary. And, not knowing what Prague 3, 8, 2 means, could use help locating a nice, safe place. Will arrive June 24 and stay 2 nights. Would greatly appreciate any help.

It is hard enough to find a budget hotel in the Old Town or Mala Stana ("Lesser Town" across the Charles Bridge) in Summer, and on a weekend, even if you book ages in advance. You will need to try some of the last minute services like lastminute.com or wotif.com. The only areas I would stay in are Prague 1 and 2 because they are central. I don't know about safety but the suburbs of Prague are full of ugly cement apartment blocks.

I recommend going to www.athos.cz and asking advice from one of the agents there (by e-mail I suppose - - they used to have "live" online support by way of ICQ, but I think no longer).

Best wishes,

Do not limit yourself to staying in Stare Mesto. Get yourself a map of the Prague Metro (do a google search). You can stay anywhere with a Metro stop nearby. The Metro is as easy as pie to use, and will get you to all the tourist areas. I think Prague is a very safe city.

Look on www.travel.cz They have last minute rates, and you might be able to book one of their apartments in Prague 1 or 2 for a great rate (you could all stay in one place - if you want to - if you can book something with a few bedrooms). They also have hotels & pensions on that site.

PS - Prague is safe, as long as you are not a naive tourist type. (Don't walk on the Charles Bridge with a camcorder & fanny pack that can be easily ripped off your body..)

I stayed in a great place in Old Town that was around $60 US a few years ago. It had a double bed and another single in a large room with a newly renovated bathroom. It is called Dum U Krale Jiriho and if you do an internet search you will see the hotel come up in various hotel search sites. Not sure of the actual hotel website.

It is over a fun irish pub so you should request a room that is on one of the higher floors. Nothing scary, I was traveling alone and had no problems. Great location.

My family of four stayed in the Pension U Lilie last June, in their family room which was a good size for us. It is a good value, if a bit tattered around the edges, but very clean, nice cold breakfast buffet, friendly people, and you can't beat its location near the Charles Bridge.

The Dum U Krale Jiriho (House at the place of King George" is a pretty good choice for the price. It has two webpage addresses www.ukralejiriho.cz and www.kinggeorge.cz. I can vouch for the area and the Irish bar underneath it is the James Joyce where I've spent many an hour over the years.

I was in Prague this past January and stayed at the Hotel Certkova, which I booked through Athos travel (http://www.prague-guide.info/). The winter rate I paid was right around $120 per night, but it is almost certainly more in summer. HOWEVER, this was a GREAT hotel--here is a website with some photos http://www.a-prague.com/hotel-certovka. This was a wonderful small hotel that is quite literally a short stone's throw from the Charles bridge. It is right next to the bridge and rooms on the upper floors also have a great view of the castle (ask for one of the larger corner rooms). If you are looking for a guide I heartily recomment this woman--http://www.prague-guide.info/--who really made the city come alive for me. I'd never used a guide before, but I am very happy that I did. I learned a lot about Prague and had a blast!
