Sad News for the global traveling Community; earthquake in Thailand

No need to point out this is a European Travel Forum; to me this forum is more than that. It is the sharing of people who love travel. A representation of that community has been terribly impacted by forces of nature while traveling in Thailand. My prayers are with their loved ones.

The earthquake is reported by CNN to be closest to Sumatra, not Thailand. The resulting tidal waves affected Thai islands, last reported killing hundreds. The greatest fear is that thousands have died in Sri Lanka, also because of the tidal waves.

We live in Duri, Indonesia on the island of Sumatra. Despite our proximity, we were not affected by the earthquake. Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones. A sad day indeed.

My heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones. We were just in Phuket last year, and our hotel has been destroyed -- I worry for the very kind couple who ran the bar next to Banyun Tree Phuket.

Pray for all of them in your own way, thank you.

ELEVEN THOUSAND PEOPLE DEAD - this was one of the world's great tragedies! My mind cannot even encompass it. 9.0 on the Richter scale and tidal waves of more than 30 feet - people were literally swept off their feet into oblivion. It's a horror story. It has nothing to do with Europe, but it sure has to do with travel, as it's prime tourist season in Malaysia and the countries that were affected. You would't want to travel to Southest Asia right now.

It's actually over 13,000 dead as of right now, and that figure is expected to go much higher. It is reported that there are some 400-600 tourists/locals that were out on snorkeling/scuba expeditions off Phuket that are missing and presumed dead. 3 Americans are dead, as far as is reported at this point.

As for traveling to Southeast Asia, it depends on where you go as to whether the area has been affected by the tragedy. Someone on the Asia board reported in from Sumatra, where the epicenter of the quake was located, and apparently did not feel the quake nor was affected by the tsunami in any way.

As for Thailand, most of the country was unaffected-certainly not BKK or Northern Thailand, but not even the beach areas on the other side of the peninsula from Phuket- Hua Hin or Ko Samui- were affected, as they lay on the Gulf of Thailand side.

At any rate, I'll be arriving BKK from Macau in about a week and a half, so I'll see for myself how things are there and what the Thai Govt. is doing to help the affected tourists. The enormity of the tragedy is simply staggering, and as yet not fully realized.

According to my newspaper (text written about 12 hours ago) about 4000 dead in India, 4000 in Sri Lanka, another 4000 in Indonesia, 390 in Thailand, dozens in Malaysia. Plus thousands missing/unknown fate. In India alone hundreds of fishermen missing. The problem of knowing about the tourists particularly in Thailand: it is a very popular destination for European backpackers, and nobody knows who or how many or where there were.

The last I heard this morning was 21,000 dead. It is just so devestating and awful. My heart goes out to all those affected.

I have friends who do missionary work and teach English in Phuket, but they are home in the US for the holidays. I fear that they have lost many students and friends.

I cannot recall any other natural disaster that took so many lives. Can anyone else?

This is a tragedy indeed.

One year ago on December 26, 2003 in Bam, Iran an earthquake claimed approx 30.000 lives.
I also recall in the mid '70's over a 1/4 million Chinese were killed in a single earthquake.

OK, thanks, I remember that quake now. Let's hope the Thailand situation doesn't top that number.
1/4 mil in China, OMG!! I hope nothing ever approaches that.

SeaUrchin, how can one even grasp the severity of this calamity? It goes beyond the mind.

All I can say is that I hope that all of us that think we have "problems" put them into the right context.

May each victim and their loved ones know the gentle love of their God.

May all of us say a prayer for these victims. Peace to all.
