?s about train from Rome airprot to Naples.

I have done my fair share of homework and studied the web sites for the euro rail but still can't see to get answers to a few ?s.

We are arriving from NYC to Rome (FCO) around 8:00 a.m. with final destination being Positano.

My understanding is we take about a 30 minute train ride from the airport to the Rome Termini Station and then from there we take another train that gets us to Naples (about 70 min.)
We already have a driver reserved to get us from Naples train station to Positano.

Here are my ?s.

1. Can we buy our train tickets at the station or do we risk the chance they will be sold out? Since we are flying I hesitate locking into a certain time for the train tickets since we have are not certain what time we will actually land, clear customs, etc.

2. Do we have to buy a train ticket and then a reserved seat ticket also?

3,. Is there a train that will take us from the Rome airport straight to Naples train station? I am okay w/ stopping at the Rome Termini Station but was hoping to not have to change trains.

4. If we have to change trains (buy 2 tickets) then can we buy both tickets at the airport?

Thank you for any help you can offer me w/ the above questions.

On question 1 I meant to say
Is it okay to WAIT and buy the train tickets on the same day after we land at the airport?

1- Yes buy a thru ticket or tickets at the train station at Rome's airport and yes there are so so many trains it is very very unlikely IME for them to sell out - just ask the airport train station desk about the next convenient train and leave plenty of time between arriving at Termini via the Airport Express train and the Naples train in Rome Termini station - a huge huge flummoxing at first glance train station - leave an hour or so to find your train - etc.

The worst case scenario would be you'd have to go first class - even more rare to sell out and IMO that has definite advantages over 2nd class - especially if your are traveling with luggage - usually ample empty seats to put your bags on - 2nd class is typically much fuller with less places to easily stow luggage - first class seats are bigger and you get a complimentary beverage and snack -

2- When you buy the Rome Termini to Naples Centrale ticket it automatically comes with the mandatory seat reservation always required on high-speed trains like you will be taking. Not a separate transaction. There are no reserved seats possible on the Airport Express train

3- No but I think there is some kind of shuttle service from Rome right to Positano but not by train.

4- Yes buy them both at the airport train station

5 - Great sources of info on Italian trains: www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

Go to www.bahn.de/en for schedules of Rome Termini to Napoles Centrale trains - you will see a plethora of such trains - 2-3 an hour or more but there are several different types of trains on that run - the slow milk train regional trains that take forever and are not so comfy and various types of IC and high-speed trains - the fastest trains are also the most comfy - they take 70 minutes all told and go non-stop but they are also a tad bit more expensive but even first-class on trains that short a ride will not break the bank.

Again put any angst to rest - no problem getting on trains on that route!

The direct shuttle from Rome to Positano mentioned above is the Marozzi bus, but isn't an option for you since it leaves Rome at 7:30 am.

Good job on booking the driver from Naples - the least painful way to get to Pos.

Enjoy your trip!

>>>I have done my fair share of homework and studied the web sites for the euro rail but still can't see to get answers to a few ?s.<<<

That's because Euro Rail is about passes and isn't any train lines/companies. Each country has their own train lines (some government run along with some private lines).

It may be just as cheap to book a limo service into Rome depending how many are in your party. Train is 14€ per person. Rome Shuttle Limo is 45€ for three. Taxis is set fee 48 for four.

>>>My understanding is we take about a 30 minute train ride from the airport to the Rome Termini Station<<<

While the actual travel time is 30 minutes, trains only depart every 30 minutes. If you've just missed one, you can figure an hour getting into the city (30 minutes wait, 30 minutes travel). In the past, you had to validate these tickets trackside before boarding, but now they are mostly time limited (90 minute window or so). Check to make sure before boarding. If no time limit on it, validate in the machine trackside before boarding.

Taxis from Naples to Positano are a set fee also (must tell the driver you want the set fee and get a slip saying so before getting in). Even if you book a private driver, the price should be somewhere around the set taxi range. Gives you and idea of price. Click the ordinary urban tariff pdf to see Naples to Amalfi area prices.

do shuttle drivers and taxis expect tips? If so how much for a bottom line price? Or no tip?

The only time-limited tickets for the train into Rome are those that are bought online. I wouldn't buy them online to avoid those time limits, because you don't know whether your flight will be on time. If you buy your tickets at the airport train station, it will be an "open" ticket, and you'll have to stamp it before boarding the train. They now have multiple signs reminding you to do this, and the last time I made this trip (a few months ago), there were also uniformed guards who were reminding everyone to stamp their tickets. The tickets from Rome to Naples on the fast trains are all reserved for a specific train, so they don't have to be stamped.

The last time I flew into Rome and proceeded from there by train to my home, the airport train station was selling tickets only as far as Rome. Since I needed to go further than that, they directed me to the travel agent just across from the airport ticket window, who will sell you tickets for all over Italy, with no markup. You can buy both tickets there, the one to Termini station and the one to Naples.

Sometimes the best connection to Naples is not passing through Termini station, but Tiburtina station. The trains to Tiburtina depart more frequently and cost less, but sometimes going to Tiburtina would cause you to miss the train, because it takes longer to get there. The travel agent will give you tickets for the best connection.

I travel frequently by train in Italy, and I've only once encountered a train that was completely sold out at the last minute. That was a train going into Rome for New Year's Eve, a rather special situation. Even then, there was another train an hour later that wasn't sold out. One other time, I had to buy tickets in 1st class, because 2nd class was sold out.

The ones you buy trackside in the machines at Termini have time limits also, not just the online tickets. I assume the same applies at FCO. Talking about the Leonardo tickets.

a recent check on Venice to Florence trains for the next day showed several were fully booked in 2nd class but all had seats in first class - so at worst-case scenario you may have to at the last minute go first class - suffer thru first class, which for the average traveler with perhaps too much luggage, I always advise taking in Italy and Europe in general - much easier IME to stow luggage - often empty seats (reason you can always buy first-class tickets even at last minute).

That has been my experience several times in Rome's main airport - may as well head to the private travel agent whom Trenitalia is allowed into the station right opposite their ticket windows.
