My wife and I were in both St. Petersburg and Moscow in July. We envy your future trip. We got our Visa's through a company name Visa Advisors out of Washington DC. The cost depends how soon you need it. If you order a month in advance is cheaper than 10 days in advance. You pay a hefty premium if you wait till the last minute. We ordered ours 10 days in advance and Visa Advisors had it back to us within a week. Had no problems getting them and found their service very good. The next time we may try to go directly to the Russian Consulate and save some money. You must enclose original letters from the hotels you are staying at confirming your reservations.
We took the train from St. Petersburg to Moscow and was pleasantly suprised. Good luck and have a great trip.
