Did a two-week cruise from St. Petersburg to Moscow in June, 1995, and it was a marvelous, enlightening, experience. The riverboats go along the canals and rivers of Russia, and you stop at many small and fascinating river towns, plus four days in M and SP. The food and cabins were passable, but I thought of it as an adventure and accepted the conditions as such. Truly this is the easiest and most relaxing way to see the heart of Russia. Many cruise boats take the same route--check with a major travel agency or do a search. I can't even remember the name of the tour company, but I visited several boats docked next to each other and they looked practically identical. Things may have been upgraded, but even if they aren't, I really hope you do this trip!
Hi
This summer my friends from the States took such a cruise from St.Pete to Moscow (my home city). They used Grand Circle Travel company. As they told me they were satisfied with the service and enjoyed the tour very much. At my pity I don't have any address or phone of this company.
Good luck,
Konstantin
My parents recently visited St. P. on a mini cruise from Dover via Oslo and Amsterdam. If you contemplate doing something like this note that without a visa you will not be allowed off the boat in St. P. to do sightseeing independently. My parents had to do the tour organised by the ship as this includes some visa arrangement. This was not a problem for them but if you prefer sightseeing alone you need to get a visa before you leave. Presumably to do a trip as described by the other correspendants you'd need to get a visa before leaving home anyway.
