Russia Travel tourest visa requirements

Hopefully I can get some suggestions about traveling across Russia.
I would like to enter Russia from Mongolia, about August 15, 2012, go to Irkutsk, Then West on trans-Siberian Railroad most of the time an end up in St. Petersburg about October 15, 2012, and return back to America, but stop off in Kazakhstan for about 5 days along the way. I most likely would travel as a tourist

Questions-1 can I travel as I like, as a single person, in Russia or due I have to go around Russia as sort of a single person group tour, with a pre-determined plan? Let me say it another way-due I have to decide exactly before I enter Russia- , know when I want to stop-figure out the time and costs before I enter Russia - lodging costs and reservations completed before I go into Russia -- or just sort of be myself and set my own pace any given moment -only be tied down to the beginning date August 15, 2012 and the ending date to leave Russia- Sept 15 2012?
Question-2 due i have tp have/purchase my ext ticket and show it the date I enter Russia?
I would appreciate any information

I know this might be late since it is close to the dates you will need a visa for.
You can travel around as you wish for the most part but there are some border regions which require special permission for foreigners to enter. It is a common practice to explore by getting off the train for a few days but the booking of tickets in the summer will be complicated.
You biggest problem is you have to apply for a visa from where ever your residence is, you can't apply for the visa while traveling. Another restriction is not being able to apply further out than 45 days from your entry date which complicates things for world ramblers who decide on the trail where to go next.
You do not have to have a ticket with dates, because it would require buying a ticket before knowing if you could get a visa. The correct way to get the needed Visa Support is to have your hotel send it to you for the length of time you are in their hotel. Some will take the risk as put the duration down in their application for the full 30 days that a Tourist visa is possible for. The most common method of getting over 30 day visa is to apply for a 90 day business visa, in your case, a double entry 90 Day Business Visa but that is reserved for people who have visited Russia before. Up to 12 month multiple entry visas are possible.
