Rungis market outside Paris

Would those of you who have been there please tell me:
a) was the experience worth getting up at 4 or so for a 5:30 tour?
b) what was it like? Could you view the meats and veggies as at a street market or were most of the things in bulk on palattes and in trucks, etc?
c) since you can only go by escorted tour guide, where did you meet your tour guide? somewhere in Paris and then go together to the market? at the Rungis market? if at the market, how did you get there?

Thanks for any personal experience answers you can provide.

Julie,
I would also like to hear about Rungis near the Orly airport. I don't think most people realize the enormous size of this market that feeds most of France and much of Europe as well. Am picking up a car at Orly in June and would love to see Rungis.
Julie, I was going to post something on Rungis, when I saw your post.
Hope someone can tell us about it and if you really have to have a guide. I understand the place is enormous and that Rungis was born because Las Halles became too small to handle the large market demand.
Everything I've read suggests that a guide or being with someone who has authorization is essential. Previous posts and the Patricia Wells guide have given information on that. Tours M-Fri Stephanie Curtis conducts tours in English beginning at 5:30 ending around 9 a.m. Tel 01 40 15 04 57, fax 01 40 15 04 58. Now if someone would just answer the earlier questions, please.

I found some interesting info on Rungis by searching on that topic in the bonjourparis.com site. Jack, you may want to try it.

Julie, I did find this site with some discripion of Rungus:
http://www.bparis.com/newsletter1464/newsletter_show.htm?doc_id=48335
As I mentioned earlier, Rungis is the largest market in the World and definitely deserves a visit if possible.
Most of the Actions goes on between 3 & 6 a.m.

Have no personal experience to relate but here is the website for Rungis:
http://www.rungisinternational.com/
If you need it in English you can go to google and click on "translate this page" beside this URL. On the lower right you will see "Guided visits." (An aside - this has one of the funnier mistranslations I have seen. "Salons," meaning salons, exhibitions is translated as "Let us Salt"!)
I must say that it doesn't look very good for your chances of visiting on your own. As best I can determine, visits of Rungis are limited to professionals or students of the food/hotel business or tourist groups of 15 or more. And you have to provide your own bus for the guided tour! Maybe I missed something. If someone else knows of a way to do this, please correct me.

I was doing a search for Rungis Market and found this old thread. Has anyone had a tour? Can you tell us if there is someone who gives tours other than the market itself, as they only do it on the 2nd Friday of a month, and that won't work for us.

Has anyone toured with Stephanie Curtis or any other private guide through Rungis?
