I am flying into London at the end of September, and want to take the train to Edinburgh. I believe the train takes about 4-1/2 hours. Can you please tell me what train to take and approximately how much this costs, leaving from London early Friday, Sept. 28 and returning early Monday, October 1. <BR> Do you think that I will need to make hotel reservations in either city for this time of year?

Vanessa, there are lots of trains on this route - its the East Coast main line. Takes about 5 hours and you can check times and book online (to collect tickets at the station in London) at: <BR>http://www.thetrainline.com The station you need to type in for Edinburgh is 'Edinburgh Waverley'. Costs vary, but booking in advance is usually cheaper. Also look at the GNER site http://www.gner.com for bargain fares / offers. There is also a 'sleeper' service from London to Edinburgh -this may be an option you could consider. Prices for an 'Apex' return start at around £109 return -this does of course include a berth! -Details can be found on the trainline as the poster above mentioned or on www.scotrail.co.uk/sleepers

There are lots of threads on this. Actually, it's the Great Northern train, not the East coast. Pick it up at Kings Cross station--they leave very frequently. Call from the states and order your tickets at least three weeks in advance for the best pricing (super apex). You can also reserve your seats this way (ask for a table--no extra charge). The tickets will be waiting for you at will call (enter the station and look left--last line on the right. Notice the LONG queue of people to your left buying tickets for same day travel, paying lots more than you). It can take anywhere from 4-5 hours depending on the time of day because some make more stops than others (early afternoon Sunday travel took 5 hours, Monday morning took 4). The price is around 39 pounds "return" (round trip), if I remember correctly.
