Royal Scotsman Train?
Would love to have input from those who have traveled on the Royal Scotsman train. I'm considering their garden-tour train trip in June. I'm a bit worried by the foo-foo of "dressing" for dinner. How formal is dinner? I'm a typical U.S. type who doesn't own evening wear although I clean up pretty good.

Don't worry about dressing up. Just neat and trim and clean is fine, take something with a good fabric and cut and it will look top notch with accessories. I take my black little silk Ann Taylor pants suit with straight legged pants and black sandals and it is fine.

Wow, either that company has really changed or I was on another tour altogether. Mine was alot of women sipping tea and talking in teeny tiny voices about gardens.
This looks much better believe me, I don't know the price, it isn't on the web site, but I would say go for it if you can. It looks like a once in a lifetime experience that I would love to take myself.
And don't worry about dressing up, the English when dressed up still look tweedy and pearly. So go!! And take a little black suit!!

The Royal Scotsman tours are pretty POSH - almost like the Orient Express excursions. You do not need Formal wear (as in long gown and long gloves). But you would want to dress well. Daytime in a Ralph Lauren, casual designer, or "up country" styles, And evenings in cashmere sweater/silk top with nice slacks or skirt

Oh, go ahead and book it, you know you want to and you only live once and live or at least vacation by the motto: Life is not a dress rehearsal.
Why not, if you have the ways and the means? It will be a fun experience, just wear silk or velvet or good wool in basic colors and have some good shoes and you are on the way.

Are you kidding? for that amount of money she could go on a two0week cruise around the British Isles and see a ot of gardens. I went on a Swan Hellenic cruise aboard Minerva a couple of years ago. The theme was "Castles and Gardens," and it was fabulous! Dressing up meant different things to different people. The officers looked pretty spiffy and some of the men wore tuxes. It was grand. I took my basic black. It was fine.
