Greetings
Greetings
We are going to Finland for 8 days the beginning of May and are thinking of taking the overnight train to Rovaniemi, and spending 2 days, one night in the area before taking the overnight train back to Helsinki. We would rent a car in Rovaniemi and just sort of drive north. Would the weather at this time permit us to drive north to the Ivalo/Inari area or the Muonio area? Which would you suggest for scenery and just the north experience? (not into the Santa Claus thing, just want to get into Lapland) Would it be hard to find accommodation with just showing up in the small towns/villages?
Thanks

Two years ago we visited Lapland after a wedding in Poytya. We flew up to Kittila from Helsinki on the 11th June having booked the flights about two months before. We had intended to spend our few days in the ivalo area but my friend who lives in Finland told us there was more to do if we flew in to Kittila. The flights were very expensive and full.
We stayed in Levi having picked up a hire car in Kittila airport. There wetre very few people getting off our plane and I got the impression that the car hire had opened just for us.
Our hotel (Tuunturi) was deserted and just opening and then full for the third night of coach parties and we had to move. The settlement was very very quiet -only one restaurant open apart from our hotel.Lots of places had signs up saying they were opening on the 15th June.
We spent our time walking which was wonderful. The light was excellent and the water absolutely sparkling.
The point of telling you this is to illustrate that even in June very little was open in the form of facilities and I would book.

Only tend to go here in the winter but spent enough time in tourist info etc to suggest.
The place is empty, the countryside will be lovely, country will be warm.
Things to do are basically tramping in the woods, fishing, swiming in lakes
The local web sites are all pretty good, the nice thing is the people are wonderful. When we were in Roviemi they had caught their first criminal since the second world and did not know what to do with him.
