Route of the Castles: Cuellar, Turegano, Coca, Medina del Campo, Penafiel
We will be driving from Avila to Segovia in Spain, and I'm thinking I'd like to follow the Route of the Castles, perhaps a 3 hour tour, starting at Avila and ending at Segovia, seeing Cullar,Turegano, Coda, and Penafiel along the way.
Have any of you made this trip? Do you recommend it?

Years ago we tried to see Coca. Fodors implied that it could be visited, but when we got there, we discovered that it was not open to the public. I believe that Los Madrigal de las Altes Torres (sp?) is fairly close by. We were lucky to be able to visit the convent which was the home of Isabella when she was a child. It gave a good sense of the standing of Spanish royalty before the plundering of the Americas.

i have seen most of these on trips on my way up north, and assume three hours is not much time if you are going to get out and walk around..etc.
allow a bit more time.
i love seeing all these castles.

I am go1ng by faint memory, but believe I visited Turegano a few years ago. Ruinas, but really not worth the visit. Pedraza is interesting and there is truly the best lamb anywhere in Sepulveda [Tinin's] but I think I would check further before investing time in Turegano.

We saw most of these during a trip in the last couple of years. Cuellar and Turegano are not much at all. They are fixing up Turegano and nothing was open in Cuellar when we stopped.
However the castles at Coca and Penafiel were magnificent and worth a stop. Penafiel has a very interesting wine museum that I think had both english and spanish or had audio tours in both languages. Unfortunately the tour of the castle was only in Spanish but still worthwhile just to see.
