Planning a three week car trip from Milan to Naples in October 1999. We would love to stay overnight in small towns along the way, as well as the larger cities. I would prefer to go without reservations in hotels and try find pensiones and small inns. My husband is not as adventuresome as I am and he thinks I'm nuts. Any suggestions or thoughts about going without reservsations.

French Riviera Overview

Rose, My wife and I have traveled Italy from the Ticino to Sicily, Naples to the Gargano, most of the time without reservations, and have never had a problem. Our credo is "we can always sleep in the car". A word of advice, DO NOT drive in the large cities, Milan, Rome and Naples. In my opinion, the Italian drivers are very undisciplined, they create lanes where there aren't any and traffic lights are a novelty. I might add I am not a shrinking violet when it comes to driving, I drove in Manhattan for years, I think the Amalfi coast is a piece of cake, but driving in Southern Italy is not for me. An aside, three weeks from Milan to Naples seems like a long time, are you planning to make extended stops (not that it's any of my business)? In closing, we only make reservations for the first and last nights of our stay.
