Rome/Venice value restaurant

I'm looking for some ideas on some good value restaurants in Rome and Venice. I don't really want to go to any formal places, I just want a nice laid-back atmosphere at a decent price. Thanks in advance.

I cut and pasted this from other replies I posted to the board.

On the Piazza Navona, try this restaurant. Ai Tre Tartufi, 26/27 Piazza Navona, just down from the gelato shop. It served the best eggplant parmesan I've ever had and we were worried because they seemed to cater to tourists. It wasn't expensive at all, just what you'd pay here in the states, less than 11Euros. Everyone liked their meal. That's unusual! We had a friendly waiter for our group of 17 - 4 chaperones and 13 senior high students.

I'd definitely go back. The atmosphere of dining outside on the Piazza, unforgettable.

And in Venice:

In Venice, look for Bora Bora Pizzeria. It's between the Rialto bridge and Piazza San Marco, closer to the Rialto. This isn't on the Grand Canal, but right off a side canal. There is local atmosphere, cheap and delicous pizza (5-7Euros for an 8 slice pizza. Try the Capriciossa, I've been craving it since last September and can't find it anywhere local. Bora Bora, yes, it has a Tahitian theme, but it's Italian style lol!!

Here's the address S. Marco, 5251 tel 041.5236583

From the vaporetti stop Rialto, turn RIGHT on Riva del Carbon (this is parallel to the Grand Canal, but you probably know that having already visited Venice). Make the first LEFT and then the very NEXT LEFT, then the very NEXT RIGHT onto Calle Dei Stagneri. It's on the left, down what seems to be an alley, not even a 5 minute walk from the vaporetti stop.

Delizioso!

Hi Bellman --

For cheap eats in Venice, I really enjoy going to bars that serve cichetti (appetizers, basically). You can check out the book Chow Venice! (or Rick Steves' Venice) for ideas, but we enjoyed Ruga Rialto, Al Marca, and Do Mori last time we visited. All 3 of these are near the Rialto bridge. You can get a sizeable plate of cichetti, a beer, and a glass of wine for around 10 Euros.

Hope that helps -- h.

No specific recommendations, but I love all the small local cafes mid-day to stop in for a sandwich (made up in the glass cases) and a glass of cold white wine. Same idea for the standup counter bars in the morning for an espresso (or white wine) and pastry.

We went to Vino Vino for dinner in Venice, and enjoyed it. It was more expensive than a sandwich at a bar, but less expensive than a "typical" restaurant. Good location, too, and the wines were delicious (and many were VERY inexpensive).

Bellman, good idea to bring recommendations. In Rome, a bad meal can cost you more than a good meal!

Our unanimous family favorite was the family-owned Ristorante der Pallaro, walking distance from the pantheon in rome. It was 20 euros for an entire 5-course dinner including the wine and the dessert! Jovial, casual family atmosphere. Lots of fun and great home-cooked food using fresh ingredients. No hidden costs, no extra charges. Full of Italian-speaking regular customers who seemed to know the family, plus lots of tourists with Rick Steves guidebooks (that's where we found it.) I can give you more details if you want to e-mail me at [email protected] and put Rome in the subject line because I preview all my mail before deciding to open it.

Venice, food is expensive, bring a list of recommendations! We thought the food was better in Rome.
