Rome/Venice in September?

We're planning a trip to Rome and Venice. We didn't really want to go in August because it's just too hot so will probably go in mid-September. I've seen the average temperatures, but I know it's been much hotter in recent years than the historical averages. Will it be ok in September for sightseeing and being outside all day? Thanks for any input you may have.

We have been twice in September and weather was very nice. Upper 70's/low 80's in Rome and cooler up north. Should be perfect for being outside. Still warm enough in Rome to eat dinner out side.
