Rome/Amalfi Coast- 9 days
We are two people travelling and want to do Rome/Amalfi coast. We either plan to fly into Rome, do two days in Rome and 6 days based in Positano/Capri returning to fly out of Rome OR to fly into Naples do the Amalfi coast then head to Rome and do three days in Rome at the end before flying out. Does it make more sense to fly into Naples rather than into Rome in terms of saving time to be able to do the Amalfi coast then Rome?
Additionaly we are looking for "budget" accomodations in Positano, such as an apartment or bed a breakfast ($50-$60 maximum per night). Is this feasible in Positano?

I think it makes more sense to fly into Naples and out of Rome. With such a short trip you want to minimize hassle and travel time.
You can take a bus from Naples airport to Sorrento for 10 euro each ( I think the bus line is called Curreri) and then a SITA bus on to Positano.
Take the high speed train to Rome from Naples at the end of your Amalfi stay.
Sorry I can't help with accommodation in Positano, we stayed at an agriturismo in Minori.

I agree that it makes more sense to fly into Naples and out of Rome. The Amalfi Coast is a wonderful place to recover from jetlag.
$60 is only 45 euro per night. I think you will have a hard time finding a place for that price. You can use www.venere.com to search by price. You could also consider an apartment rental - they are often cheaper than hotels and you can have a few meals in saving $$ on food, which may allow for a slightly higher rental rate.

Naples-Rome by fast train "freccia" takes about 1:10 hour (43 euro).
So, Naples is a little better but the difference is small...
IMO flight schedules and cost are much more important to make your choice.

My wife and I flew into Naples and did the Amalfi Coast and Capri then headed north to Rome. I would suggest going this route since as the coast is so peaceful and relaxing which I find a nice way to start a vacation. It is very easy to get from Naples to the coast via ferry, and from Naples to Rome via the freccia fast train. It may be difficult finding a hotel in that price range in Positano. Go with ekc's suggestion of an apartment rental.

Positano is very small, "cool", and very expensive to stay, very pretty but a little bit "tourist trap"... IMO it is better for a long "stop over" than for stay overnight, but it depends on your preferences and your budget.
The best starting point to explore the region is Sorrento, more cheaper tran Positano. It is a lovely town, everywhere you hear scent of oranges and lemons...

I'm afraid your lodging cost is VERY low - you might want to check out eurocheapo.com and venere.com to see if they list anything in that range. I would assume a very basic room with shared bath and perhaps a location on the outskirts of one of the towns.
