Rome - Which Neighborhood?

We are visiting Rome for 4 nights at the end of October for the conclusion of a 2 week trip to Italy. We have visited Rome only once before for a couple of days and stayed near the Spanish Steps. To be safe, we have booked a room in the Sofitel near the Villa Borghese, a sight and neighborhood we missed during our last visit. We really know very little about the neighborhood, and I am not enthusiastic about the hotel. I would appreciate any recommendations about this area and other neighborhoods as well as any hotels that anyone favors.

By the way, we are arriving in Rome by train, though I doubt that makes any difference for recommendations.
