Rome: Where to Stay/When to Book

My fiance and I will be in Rome for 6 days on our honeymoon in March (off-season). We are looking for a budget friendly hotel for the first four nights, and then somewhere special for our last night or two.

- When should we book hotels? Does visiting in off season have benefits or detriments when it comes to booking?
- Suggestions for our fancy hotel?
- Suggestions for our budget-friendly hotel. Or has anyone had positive experiences with an Air Bnb in Rome?

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! We stayed at the Albergo Cesari several years ago. We were comfortable there and the location was perfect. At the time the price was good; I remember that booking on their website got us a better price than through another website, and the price was discounted because we stayed more than 3 nights. You might try sending them a nice email and see what reply you get.

We recently stayed at Hotel Campo di Fiori and loved it (fancy, not budget friendly). Location was great, rooms were super quiet, desk staff very helpful, great breakfast every morning, and bonus roof top terrace with 360 degree views of Rome. I booked directly through the hotel website.

For budget-friendly, try the Nicolas Inn on Via Cavour. It's just a couple of blocks from the Colisseum and walking distance to many major sites as well as close to the Termini station.

We have stayed there twice. Our rate last year was 90 euros but I think that was a little cheaper because we had stayed there before.

There are only three or four rooms and all have a private bath. For breakfast, they will give you a voucher to take to a nearby bar (that doesn't mean a saloon in Italy).

We stayed in an Airbnb apartment near the Colosseum in May 2015. It was a good location for us. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1112762

Here's a link to my trip report, where you can read more details.
