Rome Weather in January
I'm going to Italy for the first time next month. I'll be there from Jan. 15-20, 2005 and was wondering how cold I should expect it to be. Are we talking about mild sweater weather or frigid weather? In short, will we be able to enjoy the outdoor attractions somewhat or should we look forward to spending most of our time indoors? Your thoughts would be appreciated!

I was there for Christmas and New Years in 2000 and again last year.
In 2000, it rained nearly every day and was blustery cold. But it did not keep us indoors. Layer up and bring an umbrella, warm, comfortable shoes and an all weather or leather coat. I wore gloves and a scarf and was quite cozy.
This year it was cold and we had rain 1 day out of three. It weas cold - 40s - and windy. Again, dress accordingly and so the layers are easy to shed if you need to.
Also, I am from FL but was with a friend from MI and she was cold as well as the weather is damp and can be windy.

Hi Mike,
My very first trip to Rome was from the 15th to the 25th in 2002, and it was great! The weather ranged from the 40's or high 30's at night to probably about the 60's one day! I took a rain coat with a zip-out wool lining, and gloves and a scarf, so I could wear all or some over my clothes as needed. It worked out very well. Also, I think I may have been lucky, but it never rained the whole time I was there! I was able to walk a lot outside, and see everything I wanted to see while there.

I'd predict similar to Cincinnati - - both would be extremely unlikely to see six inches of snow, for example.
But "mild sweater weather"? That doesn't even happen all that predictably in Houston, Phoenix, San Diego or Tampa.
It could happen in Rome. It could happen in Cincinnati. Maybe one winter in ten?
Best wishes,
Rex

I spent New Years in Rome in 2003. The weather was suprisingly warm..coming from New York where it is freezing. I wore a fleece during the day and was comfortable. Walked everywhere, even at night, and was never extremely cold! Enjoy Rome!

I've never been to Rome, but the Weather Underground website has a good trip planning feature. You plug in your dates at your destination, and it tells you the highest and lowest temperatures that location has experienced since 1997.
For the Jan 15 - 20 period, Rome's daily high temperatures have ranged from 41 deg F to 59 deg F. Daily lows have ranged from 26 deg F to 48 deg F.
Some years there has been rain during that period, and other years there has been none. Interestingly enough there was one instance of a thunderstorm, on Jan 20, 1998. Occasionally there has been fog. The Weather Underground website does not mention a single instance of snow in that date range since 1997.

If today is any indication of January's weather we will be o.k. I will be there on the 11th. Today the high was in the mid to upper 50's. Keep your fingers crossed that the warm weather will hold a few more weeks.
