Rome train to Positano

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are taking a short trip to Positano August 10-16. We arrive August 11th at 8:40am Alitalia and are considering taking a train from Rome Termini to Naples. Our hotel in Positano Buca di Baco offered private transportation from Naples train to the hotel for 130 euro.

Few questions:
1. I fly into Rome. What is the most convenient and comfortable way to get to the Rome train station? During my last trip, I stayed in Rome 4 nights and then took a taxi to Termini to go to Naples. The train schedules are offering me a train from Roma Tiburtina to Rome Termini, transfer from Roma Termini to Napoli. Is that the best way taking a train to Termini or should I taxi?
2. If I train from Rome to Naples, do you recommend Trenitalia, Frecciarossa or italo? I prefer a nice train and it seems italo which is more affordable, I would guess is less desirable?
3. I've trained to Naples before, when we stayed in Capri, however, since we are going to Positano instead does it make sense to have a private car from Naples to Positano or should we take the hydrofoil/ferry? I often prefer to save time then money.
4. On our return, we are heading back to Rome, August 15, which is a huge travel day we hear. We fly home August 16th at 9:45am, which is why we are staying one night in Rome. Curious about your experiences traveling on August 15th.
5. If we departed our hotel 9am, what time do you recommend we book our Naples train to Rome? 1pm? or later?
6. Would you hydrofoil/ferry to Naples train or hire a private car (risk of heavy traffic)? We prefer to arrive in Rome quicker rather than be economical and take longer.

Thanks in advance for your help!
Natalie

1. I've never taken a taxi from the airport to the train station -- always the train, and it was quick and easy. When you measure the cost of a taxi and the time it takes to queue up for one, traffic, etc., the train seems like a better option, unless you have a ton of luggage.

2. Hmmm. I've taken the train, but I guess I never realized there were viable options. I just took fastest, most direct.

3. The private car is the way to go, if time is an issue. They'll pick you up right outside the train station and drop you at your hotel. You mentioned a price of 130 euros. My memory is a little foggy, but it seems we paid a little less than that. I could be wrong, but take a few minutes to compare pricing, and see what you get.

4. Don't know.

5. So the question is: What time will you arrive at the Naples station? I would check with the car service on that. They're experienced on how long it takes to get from A to B on heavily traveled days. Just ask them what time you can expect to arrive, or mention the time of your train and ask how that affects the time of pickup.

6. Don't know. Never took the hydrofoil.

Have you looked into direct Rome airport -Positano buses that some said here before were running or a car service the whole way?

Italo trains are from what folks say just as comfy as Trenitalia but I have no personal experience with them. Anyway the ride is short. If booking a discounted ticket keep in mind that those are non-changeable non-refundable, at least on Trenitalia I believe and you never know when you will actually be at Termini for those trains.

Yes Leonardo Express best fastest way to Termini from airport takes you right into the station itself.

For lots on Italian trains check www.seat61.com - www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

Personally, after a transatlantic flight, I would simply take a taxi from FCO to Termini.

The driver I always use to take us from Naples to Positano charges 100 euro (as recent as June). His name is Sergio Rianna and you can email him at [email protected]

There is no ferry direct from Naples to Positano. There is one that stops in Capri where you could catch another ferry to Positano. Ditto for going via Sorrento.

On your return to Rome, I would take the ferry to Salerno, then direct train to Rome. You can pre-book your train tickets and purchase your ferry tickets a few days in advance.
