Rome Tours
Any recommendations on a good tour of the Vatican/St. Peters? I've looked at Context Rome, but there are no Vatican tours (only art tours) for the time period we'll be there. I've read that going with a tour allows you to surpass the long lines. Thanks!

Hi Angela!
We're using http://www.througheternity.com next month. The cost was 36.00Euro per person with internet reservations.
Frommer's internet travel guide said this was the best tour to take.

Another one to check out is www.wheninrometours.com - they have a shorter, 3 hour Vatican City tour for the less ambitious traveler!

Angela- IF I were in your position,I would e-mail [email protected] and ask if they are thinking of adding another tour that interests you.They may have had other inquiries.I've found them to be very accommodating in these situations,and they're really wonderful!

Angela, what do you mean by "Vatican" if you do not want to see art? The only two atractions in Vatican City are St. Peters and the Vatican Museums. If you only want St Peter's, there are tours specific to the Basilica that do not include the museums.

Kayd - what I meant by the art, was that Context Rome only had an "art tour". Do you guys think a tour is the best way to see the Vatican, and other parts of Rome (Colloseum, etc)? The main reason I had thought of doing a tour is b/c I had heard you surpass the lines, but now I guess not.

I took the Context Rome tour called Vatican Art, about four hours for museums and St Peters. I guess they call it that because the museums and St. Peter's are full of art. I'm not sure I understand what you want -- to go to the Vatican with a guide for something other than the art?
My tour was in the afternoon -- we met near the Vatican Museums entrance at 1:00 when there was almost no line. The Context Rome guide spent our 10 minutes waiting time with a brief overview of the collections and establishing which areas the group wanted to concentrate on; then we were inside.
The tours (I also took their Roma Antica for the Forum, Colosseum, and Palatine) were worth every penny for me, but I am an art and history buff and wanted in-depth guidance. I took these tours on my second trip to Rome, because my first trip left me feeling I hadn't gotten as much as I could have out of those fabulous places.

We are going to Rome in late June and will be using a tour guide for the Vatican & Sistine Chapel. It is a woman who does a private tour for individuals or groups. Her guide fee tour is 70 euros per hour (regardless of group size), with the Vatican/Sistine chapel tour being four hours. She has passes that will allow us to bypass the lines. We were referred to her by some friends that used her in November, so I feel comforatble passing this info along to you. She is a licensed guide and also does tours of other parts of Rome. I believe that Context Rome's tour called "Arte Vaticana" is their regular tour of the Vatican. They list other tours with "art" in the name on their website but they are not at the Vatican. There is not a different regularly scheduled tour of the Vatican, as far as I can tell.

Ok, I'm waiting for replies on several of the tours listed here. I think I also read on Rick Steves that if you go in the exit door by the Museum to the information center you can buy a guided tour on the spont for 21E including entrance fee - has anyone done this? Also, I've read that if going without a guide it's better to go after 3pm to avoid the lines?

I did the Through Eternity tour of the Vatican last March. It was fabulous. Robert, our guide, was very knowledgeable and interesting to listen too. A fascinating and memorable half day. We did, howerver, stand in line for 1 hour, during which time we listened to Robert's commentaries.
