Rome to Urbino best way?

Thanks for all the good posts on Urbino..we want to go.

We can take a non-stop flight to Rome. Any suggestions on how to get to Urbino?
Right now I am thinking of taking a train to the nearest city and then renting a car and driving to Urbino. Plan to explore Le Marche area for about ten days and I know we'll need a car.

Any suggestions as to a city to pick-up the car? Ancona? There is a train from Rome to Ancona. Bologna? love that city.

I was reading recently on the Urbino University website that it is best to take a bus from Rome to Urbino. If I remember correctly, buses leave twice a day. Are there any rental car places in Urbino? you could rent there.

Many years ago I took the train from Rome to Ancona and the trip was long. The bus might be just as long but at least it would leave you in Urbino.

Here's the link to the info (in Italian). The morning bus leaves Rome Piazza Tiburtina at 7:30 and gets to Urbino at 12:30.

Did you want to head to/toward Urbino immediately upon landing at Rome? If not, consider training to Foligno, renting the car there and (assuming you haven't been to either) stopping at Assisi or Gubbio on the way to Urbino.

How long do you plan to stay in Urbino? FYI, the town has a ZTL which probably wouldn't be much of a problem unless you plan to base in Urbino for multiple days.

Where do you go after exploring Le Marche? Back to Rome/Fiumicino?

You'd have to take another bus from Urbino to a place where you could rent a car... Ancona or Rimini, but probably not any closer.

The Rome-Ancona train takes 3+ to 4+ hours, depending on the option you choose. Rimini is about 3.5 hours. Foligno 1.5-2 hours. Another car rental possibility, Arezzo, is about 2.5 hours from Rome.

In an upcoming trip, we'll be picking up an Avis rental in Arezzo, driving to Urbino and staying for a couple of nights at the Hotel Mamiani.
