Rome to Sicily/Lipari September fly/boat???

Is there a ferry we can get from Naples to Lipari on Sunday or would we be better to fly to Palermo and ferry out to Ustica ??We have flights booked to Rome in September. We then are heading straight to Sicily. I'm thinking three stops in Sicily a week each. We love the water and want to snorkel and swim as much as possible.
I love the rocky coast and am looking at staying Scopello/Bagheria/Cefalu as other destinations. We want to be able to walk to a village close by for meals
I am getting myself so confused. Advice much appreciated.

Do you want to go to Lipari or Ustica?
The overnight ferry from Naples to Lipari leaves Naples on Tuesdays and Fridays at 8pm
Snav has a fast boat Naples dp 14.30 - Lipari ar 21.00, UNTIL SEPT 10th
http://www.snav.it/orari-tratte.html
Scopellol may be rather deserted in September. May be you check San Vito lo Capo too.

Or just hop on a train from Naples Centrale to Milazzo, with daily daytime and overnight departures from €19 upwards booked online at www.trenitalia.com or www.italiarail.com

The 09:50 train from Naples arrives Milazzo at 16:26, direct.

The 13:45 train from Naples arrives Milazzo at 20:15, direct

The 23:58 sleeper from Naples arrives 06:57, direct. 1, 2 & 3 bed sleepers and 4-berth Comfort couchettes.

Then take the ferry from Milazzo to Lipari, http://siremar.it/en/ or www.usticalines.it - the hydrofoils take an hour.

That - like the direct ferry from Naples - would be an adventure, not a flight.

The train goes all the way along the coast, then across the Sicily on a train ferry, a unique experience. Bring a picnic and bottle of wine like the Italians do!

If you want to fly, fly to Catania, closer than Palermo, then drive or train to Milazzo. That's what we are doing to get to Lipari this June.

these are great ideas, I like the sound of the train trip however we will have already been on the go for over 30 + hrs . Maybe we could do that to get back to Rome.
