Has anyone made the trip from Rome to Pompeii and Herculaneum? How long does it take to get there from Rome? Can it be done as a day trip if one leaves early a.m.?<BR><BR>Any advice would be appreciated!<BR>Danusia

You can do Pompeii in a day if you leave early. It takes about 3 hours to get there. You can take the train or drive. They both take about the same amount of time.

Too much to try to do in one day in my opinion. Why not do the half hour train trip to Ostica Antica, Rome's Ancient Seaport, and save Pompeii and Herculeam for a time when you can do them justice? While a step below these two in dramatic appeal, certainly Ostica Antica does offer a very worthwhile and close-by look at ancient Roman living and culture.

Danusia, we were in Rome in October (six of us) and everyone was interested in going to see Pompeii, so we did.<BR><BR>We purchased tickets for the Eurostar high speed train a couple of days in advance. On the day we went, we left our apartment in Rome and took the metro to Termini station. We caught the Eurostar for Naples which takes under two hours. In Naples, you take the Circumvesuvianna to 'old' Pompeii (20-30 minutes). Don't take the train to 'new' Pompeii as you'll have to walk or take a taxi to the archeological site. The site is close to the station.<BR><BR>At the site, I suggest buying some water outside even though there is a cafe' inside, in case it's hot. We were under a brilliant blue sky and it was almost 80 degrees, so the water came in handy. There are vendors just outside.<BR><BR>Inside the ruin, you could spend a good four hours walking throughout the site, which is much bigger than I had imagined. It is very interesting to see. Most of the streets and many structures are still (somewhat) intact. It is an amazing glimpse at an interesting culture. You receive a map with admission purchase. <BR><BR>We caught our train back to Naples and made our train back to Rome. The Eurostar runs several times a day and if I remember, a 2nd class ticket was about $40.00 R/T. It was very comfortable.<BR><BR>We started out about 8:00 AM and were back in Rome around 9:00 PM having dinner and we saw everything that we wanted to.

Hi,<BR><BR>I took a day trip from Rome to Pompeii when I was in Italy 2 years ago. It's possible, but not very enjoyable. I was there in August and it took about 3 or 4 hours to get to Pompeii from Rome. Then we spent about 4 hours in Pompeii. It was august, really hot and dusty, so it was a very exhausting trip. I would definitely suggest you stay overnight if you want to see Pompeii.

Go to www.twenj.net click-on Rome and then Excursions. One minor mistake though, the walking directions inside the Naples Train Station should be the *Centrale* and not the Garibaldi Train station. Same station actually just on different levels. You can do it in just under 3hrs. Leaving tomorrow and a week later I'll be visiting Pompeii for my 4th time, it's worth the long daytrip IMO.
