Rome to Pisa or Bologna to Pisa-Train...Help needed!

Rome to Pisa or Bologna to Pisa-Train...Help needed!
Hello all!
I recently asked for some help planning a Europe trip and got such useful advice that I am back again!
I have a study course coming up in Pisa in May that I just found out about. I will be flying out from Doha.
Since I am on a budget, I am looking at Pegasus airlines. Firstly, any opinions on that would be valued. The flying time is the same as KLM and others and its cheaper, so... or is it worth booking with another airline?
Secondly, to get to Pisa ( by train), is it better to fly into Rome or Bologna? It would ideally have been Florence but the flights are expensive and I cant really be flexible with dates
Any ideas/ suggestions would be appreciated!

Bologna would be closer time-wise to Pisa and cheaper - it's 2 h 08 minutes by the fastest connections to Pisa Centrale from Bologna and 3 h 08 minutes from Rome
so not a major difference but Bologna should be cheaper since it is closer - cheaper if buying full-fare tickets which is nice when landing since you do not really know when you will be at the train station in either city after your plane lands.
Otherwise there are train-specific discounted tickets on the Bologna or Rome to Florence segment but they are I believe non-changeable non-refundable so if you miss the train you'd have to bujy a full-fare ticket.
It's never a problem IME of getting on trains or rarely is just by showing up but you'll pay full fare - a bit more than the discounted tickets.
From Pisa Centrale trains often roll to Pisa's Airport. The train you take from Florence to Pisa Centrale may well terminate at the airport - try to get one that does - one less change of trains. www.trenitalia.com for Italian tickets and fares and schedules.
For lots of great info on Italian trains check out these superb IMO sources: www.seat61.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com.

from Rome [Termini or Tibertina] it's about twice as long and twice as expensive.
Have you looked at whether you can fly into Pisa [sorry if that's a silly question!]

annhig, I have looked into the flying option but the times arent working out and its more expensive

Just a small correction to PalenQ: at present trains do not run between Pisa Centrale and Pisa airport, as the railway line has been closed and is being converted into an automatic people mover. Till late 2015 the only public transportation will be by urban bus.

asps - that's useful to know. We're looking at possibly going to Florence via Pisa Airport with the group from our italian language class next year - it looks as if the bus from the airport to Florence might be a better idea than the train. Thanks!

Don't forget to look into Milan flights. Our son was able to get a flight for May that was 1/2 the price for flying into those airports already mentioned, but I don't know if any flights originate from Doha. Frequent High Speed trains Milan- Pisa.
Note: Pisa airport is only 1.5 km from train station so even taking a taxi if you had to can't be that bad. From our hotel which was a bit further than train to airport, it cost 2 of us with luggage 10 euros. Fast and efficient.

No high-speed train serve Pisa - an occasional IC train or ES but mainly regional on tracks not built to convey high-speed trains. From Milan you take high-speed trains to Florence then the slow regional stopping trains to Pisa Centrale for buses to the airport.
