Rome to Pisa day trip by train - exactly how crazy is this

Hello all. We leave for Rome in 2.5 weeks (Nov. 15), and my husband indicated this morning that he'd like to see Pisa, if possible. (He didn't realize that it's much closer to Florence than Rome.) In planning our trip and with our limited time, we decided to do 6 nights in a Rome hotel (already paid) instead of spending an overnight somewhere else. We also had thought we'd like one day in the countryside for a change of pace from our Roman site-seeing.

So, (1) is heading to Pisa and back by train in one day ridiculous, infeasible or simply not worth it? (2) Is the train ride from Rome to Pisa in the least bit scenic? (3) I know people warn against driving in Italy, but is driving to Pisa and back in ONE day in any way a better, easier, quicker, more scenic, or otherwise superior idea?
