Rome to Pisa
My wife, three kids and I are spending a week in Rome. I'd like any advice on whether it would be feasible to do a day trip up to Pisa. Being Australian my wife and I don't mind long distance travel and the kids will do as they are told!! A train or bus would give us a chance to see some country side?

Hi Ian - It's about a 3 hr journey by train - so quite viable as a day-trip.
Most journeys involve a change of train at Florence (- Eurostar to Florence, then Regional train to Pisa) - but the 07.35 IC (Intercity) from Roma Termini is direct (- arr. Pisa 10.57).
With an early start you could even spend a few hours in Pisa, then spend the rest of the day in Florence.
For timetables and fares see:

Hope this helps ...

Steve-we're staying near the Termini (not a good area I hear?) so this will should make the whole thing easier to plan. I really appreciate your advice. With the opportunity to see a bit more of Italy I will really be in the good books with my wife. Thanks - Ian

Don't even thing going via Florence. Go via the coastal line, Roma Termini - Grosseto - Livorno - Pisa Centrale. It's over 3 hours each way. You will see parts of a beautiful coastline in the Maremma and then between Livorno and Rosinano. There are lots of trains which go directly from Rome to Pisa, why bother changing in Florence!?
This said... don't do it. It is too long. Go to the Maremma instead.

If cost is not an issue, then go via the Eurostar to Florence (1.5 hours) change for Pisa and you'll be there in just over 3 hours total time. As suggested before, it will allow you to see Pisa, then spend some time in Florence before your return to Rome.
It would be cheaper, and 20 minutes slower to take a direct train to Pisa - if mainly going to see the tower, then don't get off at Pisa centrale, get off at Pisa San Rossare - it is much closer.
Opinion is divided on whether Pisa is worth seeing. I really like it - to me the Campo dei Miracoli would be worth doing even if the tower were straight (or missing). 25 minutes by train on from Pisa is Lucca - also worth a few hours - if only to walk around the walls.
