First of all - have you thought about flying from Rome to Paris? That is a long time on the train!
Milano Centrale is a pretty easy station to navigate, I think. You'll get off the train from Rome, go look at the boards and see which platform your train to Paris will leave from (may not be posted till fairly close to departure time). They're all in a row.
Changing trains at Caen might require you to use their under-the-track tunnels. Again, no big deal - the signage is clear and there are only six platforms, I think. The platform for your train to Cherbourg will be on the monitors on each platform. How long do you have to make each connection?
I believe, though, that you'll have to get from Gare de Lyon train station in Paris (where your train from Italy will arrive) to Gare St Lazare, where the trains to Caen leave from. Metro line 14 connects them.
Thanks for that - actually we are not doing Paris Cherbourg on the same day Good to know the signage is clear
