Rome to Naples/Pompeii

Rome to Naples/Pompeii
I will be traveling to Rome in November and wanted some advice on a one day side trip to Naples and Pompeii. My friend and I are looking to tour Pompeii in the late morning/early afternoon, then travel back to Naples for some walking and dinner before heading back to Rome that night.
Is it worth the hastle to try and do this on our own, or is it easier to just book a trip and skip the dinner in Naples (no tours seem to offer the dinner break)?
I am just trying to get som feedback on ideas.

Logistically, it should be easy to do on your own, and you can search this forum for any of the MANY threads that discuss this particular day trip.
The challenging part is fitting Pompeii and the Archeological Museum of Naples (in which the artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum are located) and a bit of Naples, let alone dinner, into a single day trip from Rome.

No one can gauge the value of this trip to you. We can only outline the logistics. If you have to skip dinner in Naples, does a tour, even if easier, have value to you?
If by dinner, if you mean trattoria or better, no respectable trattoria would open before 1900 or 1930 for dinner. You can compute the implication of the opening time to your return to Rome. Here is how you find the train schedule. www.trenitalia.com or http://www.italotreno.it.
If you mean pizza, popular places have queue all afternoon. You will have to get there at the opening time for lunch to minimize the wait. This would be incompatible with your routing sequence.

I should say I really would like to go to Pompeii. My travel partner really wants the dinner in Naples. So for me I would easily skip Naples but I feel like I'd be putting that ahead of my travel partners thoughts.
For me eating in Rome (although I haven't done that yet) would be just as good as Naples. I'm just trying to see if it is easily feasible.

Admittedly not everyone would do this, but I would go to Pompei, head back to Naples around 3, have a slice of pizza & head off to either the archeological museum or a walk around Naples. At 7.30, I'd sit down to dinner at Mimi alla Ferrovia, near the train station, & explain I had a 9.45 train to catch. Wouldn't be getting back to Rome unil after midnight, however.
But it is quite doable to have pizza & get on an earlier train, skipping dinner in Napoli. Be sure to bring water for your tour of Pompei & snacks to eat.

Book discounted Rome-Naples tickets way early to get much cheaper than walk-up prices but note those tickets are train-specific and I believe non-changeable non-refundable -a bit tricky as who knows when you will be ready to return.
Best is leave Rome as early as possible and do Pompeii and then build in as much time in Naples as possible - if back in Naples earlier than the train just explore Naples a bit - and be sure to catch your non-refundable non-changeable train to Rome. In addition to Man's commercial site he gives above for general info on Italian trains and Pompeii I also like www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com.
Book tickets either on www.trenitalia.com or its competitor www.italotreno.com - to Naples Centrale then you just hop the metro-like CircumVesuviana commuter trains to Pompeii-Scavi station right in front of the entrance to the ruins - no need to pre-book and like any metro can't - just buy tickets once at CircumVesuviana station - buy a return ticket Naples-Pompeii-Scavi.

Pompeii has water fountains where you can refill any bottle you have normally although during the water restrictions they turned the fountains off. They also have a restaurant where you can purchase drinks/food/snacks.

The food available in Pompei is not only not very good, trekking over to where it is sold when you are hungry or thirsty can be a waste of time. Repeating my suggestion to bring food & snacks to what is a very large ruin with very few amenities.
