Rome to Naples Train Logisitcs?

My flight from the US is scheduled to arrive at Fiumicino at 11:10 am on Sunday, Sept 16th. I'm trying to get from the airport to Ravello. There is a ES train to Naples at 13:45. I have some questions about the train service:
1. Does 2.5 hours allow enough to get through customs and from the airport to Rome Termini?
2. Given the date of travel do I need to make a reservation or buy the ticket before I arrive at the train station?
3. If I buy a train ticket and then can't get to the station in time is there any way to use it on a later train?
4. The Trenitalia website site shows most trains going to Naples Centrale but the ES train goes Piazza Garibalidi. Aren't they were the same thing?
5. Is the area around Piazza Garibaldi bad enough that I would want to contiue on to Salerno to get car service to Ravello? I think they charge the same from either location.

1. Are you training to the main station in Rome or taking a taxi/ car service? The express train leaves FCO every 30 minutes and travel time is 30 minutes so it could possibly take one hour if you get to the tracks just as a train has pulled out.

2. It really shouldn't be a problem getting a train to Naples. You can book it at the airport after you collect your luggage.

3. Ticket change rules are on the Trenitalia website.

4. Naples Centrale and Garibaldi are the same.

5. If you are arranging a car to pick you up at the train station, I wouldn't worry about the area. Keep a close eye on all your possessions and don't let anyone carry your luggage unless it's your car service.

People really get too stressed about trains in Italy.

Hi G,

I suggest that you take the train to Salerno.

From there you can take the ferry (scenic route) or the SITA bus to Amalfi and a cab to Ravello.

1. It took us 3.5 hrs on our last visit. Luggage took forever.

2. Probably not. YOu can buy your tickets to Naples or Salerno at the train station at FCO when you buy your tickets to Rome TE.

3. If you are on an IC, it is good on any train, but you will need to buy a seat reservation. For an ES*, you will have to buy another reservation.

4. Napoli Centrale and Garibaldi are the same station.

5. No.

Enjoy your visit.

The train station/s in Napoli, i.e. Centrale and Garibaldi are NOT exactly the same. While in the same building, you will miss a train if your train is departing or arriving at Garibaldi while you are looking for it in Centrale. The Garibaldi Station is downstairs! E* Trains from Rome to Salerno for example or Naples to Rome depart/arrive in Garibaldi. The Circumvesuviana commuter is also at Garibaldi. Subtle but critical difference.

Napoli Centrale and Napoli P.G. are in the same complex but on two different floors. The difference is how trains approach. Southbound trains to Centrale go around the east side of Naples because Centrale is a "dead end" station. If they are coming from Rome, they go through Aversa and Caserta. Trains to P.G. however enter from the west, traveling in tunnels through Naples proper. This track loops through Pozzuoli and Mergellina and is also the same track as one of Naples' subway lines. Both tracks merge into the main Rome-Naples line about 30 miles northwest of Naples.

Trains coming from the south however (Salerno, Reggio Calabria, etc.) follow the same approach through Naples's southeastern suburbs but branch into different tracks just outside the station limits.
