Last summer we took the train from Rome to Florence. We took the Eurostar because it is the fastest (about 1 and half hours) and you can reserve seats - second class is fine. We landed in Rome and took the train to the city from the airport and they had a quiosk in the airport selling rail tickets, so I just went ahead and bought tickets then and there for our departure later in the week. I understand you can buy them at travel agents or the american express office in Rome as well. When we did leave Rome, I bought our return tickets on that day at the station. You can call Rail Europe (or check their website) and get train times. They are just about hourly. It's cheaper to buy tickets when you're there, but I wouldn't wait until the day of departure to buy in case the train is full. Good luck. I know I got myself in a tizzy worrying about this type of thing!!

You can use www.trenitalia.com, the website for the Italian railways. The site has an English version, but you'll still need to enter the Italian names of cities, e.g., Roma and Firenze, to get information.

Past Post: GO TO www.trenitalia.com/ click-on "English", (Also later check-out the other click-ons "Agencies, Special Offers, On Line Ticket Office etc) Now type-in your 2 cities (In English), type-in your "dates & time" and then click-on "Search". Once in the timetables to find the fares and connection info, to the left of your train under the "Select" column either click-on the train's # (1,2,3,...) or the "red square/triangle". If your fare *isn't* listed go to the bottom of that page click-on "Fares" and the next page under "Seats Number" type-in number of seats you want *most likely* next to the "Standard Fare" line. Choose "seat reservations" and your "Class" (1st/2nd) if they are options and click-on "Fares". I haven't done it but you can now buy your tickets on-line directly thru their website (when it works.
<<<Now _sometimes_ only with the *smaller* cities/towns, when you click-on "Search" it brings you to another option where either or both the "Arrival" or "Departure" stations has a "pull-down" of 2 or more choices of stations, *there is a glitch here* and you will just go around it circles unable to choose one, you will keep getting a "pop-up" on screen. So just choose your station and hit the back button and start your search again but this time *type-in* the specfic station name. Example: Verona will give you 3 different stations just go back and type-in (in my case) Verona Porta Nuova>>>.
xxx: From FCO (Rome's Fuimicino airport) into Rome (past post).
Go to http://www.adr.it/en/fiumic/fiumic-00.html click-on "Airport Map". Arrivals is on the ground floor, you want to go up 2 levels so you can take the walkways (yellow tubes on the map) over to the small (4 tracks?) train station. It's very easy, one look outside and you'll see the walkways and the train station. As you enter the station the ticket window is on the right, if there is a long queue/line go to the newstand/kiosk to the left of it and buy your ticket. The train is *usually* on the last track (4?) to the right. The departure board will say "Termini" I believe and the departure time. If you have time board at the furthest cars away, usually less crowded and when you get to Termini it will put you ahead of the herd, it's quite a long hike into the train station from the track you arrive on. The train is now 17,000L and a taxi would cost you ~80,000L (airport to hotel).
Also on the left-side in the airport train station is an FS ticket booth where you can buy your regular train tickets. This way you can avoid the long lines at Rome's Termini train station. I would give myself a *very tight minimum* of 45mins, from the airport train's departure to boarding an outbound train from Termini. I've also heard! that the FS ticket booth also sells the Airport-Termini train tickets?
