Rome to Florence

Hello,

My husband and I are beginning to plan for our 20th Anniversary trip for April 09. We can get a direct flight to Rome well within our budget - but are staying the first 4 nights in Florence and then heading down to Positano. My question is, would you go with the direct flight to Rome and train up to Florence? How would I do this, and any idea the cost?? Or would it be better just to take a connecting flight somewhere in Europe and end up in Florence??

How about an open jaw flight into Florence and out of Naples? That way you could, since you are already set for Florence for the first 4 days, be able to relax and see Florence then take the train to Rome...see Rome ..the onto Positano.
The train from Florence to Rome and visa versa is only about 1 hour 38min. Take the Eurostar or AV train..it is around 28.90Euro per ticket 2nd class. For such a short of a trip...second class is fine.
You can also find an AV eurostar train tween Rome and Naples for the 1hour 27 min trip for around the same rate 28.90Euro per ticket. you may get a slightly better airfare flying into Milan and taking the train to florence and then out of Naples.

If you fly into FCO Rome, to get to Florence you

- take the shuttle train, the Leonardo Express, from FCO to Roma Termini, the main train station in Rome. Takes about 30 minutes, costs about 10 euros per person, departures every 30 minutes.

-at Roma Termini, you board the train mentioned by russwuf, for whcih there will be departures about every hour.

Buy all your tickets at the airport so you can get right on your train to Florence when you reach Roma Termini.

You can also take the local nonES train for 15.80 euro takes 10-15 min longer, and is fine 2nd class for so short a trip. runs every hour. If you go to http://www.trenitalia.com site and put in a date within the next week (7 days) all the local trains will come up (ic). You can't book them far in advance. Also if you decide on ES as for the Amica fare its slightly cheaper.

Do you mean between FCO and Rome or Roma and Florence?

According to the Trenitalia site, between Rome and Florence the IC train takes 2 hours 33 minutes--an extra hour beyond the 1 hour 35 minutes for the ES or AV. The R trains takes 3 hours 39 minutes.
