Rome to Coast
Hi, my family and I are staying in Rome for a week and we wanted to do 1 night 2 days in Sorrento/Positano/Amalfi area. I was wonder what the cheapest and fastest was way to get there and back along with how to get the the nice beach area in amalfi and positano while our hotel is in Sorrento. Any leads and tips would be great, Thanks. Btw we don't have to go to all three places. Just want to do the places that are the most worth it, view, beach, and overall wise.
Thank you
Thank you

I'm not sure what people have in mind when they say "beach". Do you mean expanses of powdery sand, or would you be happy with a narrow pebble beach with great scenery?
The Amalfi Coast doesn't have much of the first kind of beach, because the scenery is due to the steep cliffs that plunge to the sea, leaving little room for wide beaches.

Sorrento itself has a nice enough beach - trains are cheapest Rome to Sorrento if you book far in advance to get limited in number discounted tickets- www.trenitalia.com -book your own- great train info: www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.
Trenitalia trains take you to Naples Centrale where you switch to the CircumVesuviana commuter train to Sorrento - about a 5 minute walk in passageways link Centrale to the CircumVesuviana station.

It will take half a day to get there and half a day to come back-you'll just be able to see Sorrento your first day and it has zero to offer in terms of sights and the dreamy seaside old port you envision for this area. That first half day could be spent at nearby Pompeii- when are you going -Pompeii can get really hot in summer so bring a sunbrella with you (could rain in spring or fall).

We are currently in Sorrento and the beaches are two small fishing ports, Marina Grande (the smallest), Marina Piccola (large) ironically in Italian they are named in reverse. They both have restaurants that own the enclosed part of the beaches so you can swim in the ocean, in Marina Piccola the beach is bigger and also pebbled.
Positano has a large beach with pebbles also, Capri has better beaches but you have to take a ferry from Marina Piccola.
We personally love Sorrento and we are using it as a base for 6 days to go to Amalfi Coast and the islands, this is our 3rd time here staying on top of Marina Grande beach, we keep coming back.

I forgot, getting here from Rome is time consuming, by car and by train for just one night.
Getting to Sorrento and not being able to see the Amalfi Coast that you need at least 4 days it's pointless imo. I would just go to Ostia or the other small beaches around Rome and Civitavecchia.
