Rome to Amalfie Coast-10 year anniversary

My husband and I are going to Italy for the first time May 23rd for our 10 year anniversary. We are arriving in Rome and need to get to Positano. Does anyone have suggestions for the best, and most reasonably priced, way to get to our hotel from the airport?

Also we are spending 3 days in Positano and then 3 days in Rome. Can anyone recommend any great restaurants for either area, either moderate or expensive? We have reservations for Eolo one night, but want to mix it up. Thank you!!

A friend in Chicago recommended his friend Aldo's restaurant in Rome and I'll always remember that evening - delicious dinner and nice hosts at La Taverna dei Fori.

From Rome I took the train to Naples, then went downstairs to get the local commuter-style Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento. And from there you can take the SITA bus to Amalfi. It's not as bad as it sounds!

Or take the train through to Salerno, then back to Amalfi by bus or boat (if the boat is running in May).

Sorry, you want to go to Positano. That's better reached via Naples and Sorrento as described by sheri above..

there is a local train from airport to the central station in ROME, get a RT ticket and make sure u stamp it in the machine b4 u board the train(to avoid fines). Go over the river to Trastevere for a nice romantic dinner. It's hard to get a bad meal if u avoid tourist traps. I think its like 20 euro. Then take the local train to Naples and switch to the circumvesuviana which goes out toward Amalfi. After that your on your own. Happy Anniversary next time go to Sicily its gorgeous I used to live in Taormina

There is a reasonable bus service to Rome from Fiumicino. I believe they have a kiosk just outside the arrival exit in the main concourse. The best way to get to Sorrento would be to take a hydrofoil from Naples, Beverello pier. Go to the SNAV web site (www.snav.it) for their schedule. The hydrofoils take only 20-30 minutes to Sorrento and another half hour to Positano. The departures, however, are much less frequent than the Circumvesuviana train line, which takes an hour to Soirrento. The train would be much more dependable choice outside the summer months.

Sorry, you can never forget mother tongue and French emerges all the times I am talking about emotions. Here's what I meant to say English:

You can have here a very romantic candlelight dinner served in the the garden of a special historical palace in Positano.

arnthal, the OP wanted the cheapest way to Positano. How much would the ferry cost? And would it be running in May? Also they'll have to transfer from the Naples train station to the port.

Depending on the time of your arrival in Rome, I also recommend direct train from Rome to Salerno and then ferry to Positano. The last ferry leaves Salerno at 3:30, so you would have to be there by at least 3:15. It is a short walk from the train station to the ferry dock.

The ferry, which started running again in April, costs 12 euro pp and the ride is 70 minutes long. Wonderful way to see the coast and Positano.

If you do not arrive in Rome in time to catch the train to Salerno to arrive by 3:15, the cheapest is then train to Naples, local train to Sorrento and bus to Positano.
