Rome Restaurant Recommendation Anniversary

Hello Fodorites,

I am going to be in Rome at the end of September with my husband celebrating our annivesary and was wondering if anyone had any special restaurant recommendations. I don't want anything too crazy expensive or formal necessarily...just something authentic with good food and nice atmosphere? Also, we have been to Rome many times so if there is anything that you have done that you thought was interesting aside from the usual sights that one sees the first or second time they go, would love to hear about it. Not that I could ever be bored in Rome believe me.

Thanks very much.

Which are these places you are referring to that are "usual?"

When some people ask this kind of question, many others would respond, and the original posters would come back later and declare they have already done those.

In which part of the city will you be staying? There are nearly 1000 restaurants in Rome, and since you aren't looking for anything with Michelin stars, you can surely find something appropriate without traveling far.

We recently had two good meals, and very reasonably priced, at La Scala, on a stairway (scala) leading up from Via Veneto. There's another restaurant with that name in Trastevere. The atmosphere was rather elegant, and the menu has many traditional Roman dishes.

I agree with Greg that there's no way to recommend things to see unless you give us a brief rundown of what you've already seen.

It would also help to know your interests. There are over a dozen world-class museums in Rome, and nearly as many spectacular archaeological sites. There must be fifty or more churches that are really important from an artistic, historical, or architectural point of view.

The very first time I was in Rome I made sure to visit Ostia Antica, because of my interest in ancient history. I'm pretty sure most people don't go there on a first or second visit.

A couple of stand out visits for me were to the Quartiere Coppede and Palazzo Valentini.

Thank you...when I say usual I mean, Vatican, St. Peter's Basillica, Forum, Pallantine Hill, Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, Pantheon, Borghese Gardens, the Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona, and Trastevere. I would think that most of these are the sights/areas that people try to get on their first or second trip. We will be staying in the Jewish Ghetto near Campo D'Fiore. Thanks for your suggestions.
