Rome Parking Garage
We will be arriving in Rome with a car. We want to park the car for the three days we are in the city, but don't want to turn it in because we are renting the car for a month. I e-mailed our hotel, the Smeraldo (Campo di Fiori area), regarding a garage. They say the only place to park is PARKING GIANICOLO in the center of the city. They did not, however tell me exactly where this lot is. They said to take a cab (12-15 Euro) to the hotel from there.

Does anyone know this garage? Can someone tell me how to get to it from the Rome airport? And are our parking options limited to this one garage?

Hi Catherine,
the parking you have been told about is located near the Vatican City.
(and it's a very good suggestion not to take the car in Rome!!!)

From the airport, take the highway to Rome. After a few miles, you'll see on your right handside GRA (grande Raccordo Anulare) and 2 exit.
Take the second one Direction AURELIA centre of the city.

Then, always right handside, Pick up exit direction AURELIA Centre of the City and Vatican City.
When in Rome, always follow Vatican City directions.
Indications for the Parking will be shown on your right just after passing a tunnel, (just after via Gregorio VII and Piazza Cavalleggeri) just after Vatican (and Cathedral of St Peter's), and TURN RIGHT.

At the airport, try to get a map from Rome, it will help as well.

Have a wonderful trip.
Michelle
This car park is not the only car park option, but it is probably one reachable very easily.
Other carpark in Rome might terribly expensive.
Another carpark available is VILLA BORGHESE which is located just under Villa borghese. Very well located but quite expensive.

Campo di Fiori area is near car Park Gianicolo (not even 10 minutes with a cab)

Michelle
Thank you for the information. We will have come from Venice, and the Rome airport where we are picking up our two daughters. That means we will have all our luggage with us in the car. Will it be a problem to find a cab to take four of us with a suitcase each to the hotel from the carpark? Do you think we could drop our bags off at the hotel first, and then take the car to the carpark--or will it be impossible to even stop at the hotel long enough to drop off the bags?

Hi Catherine,
Going to Campo di Fiori with a car is impossible from 7am to 6pm mon to fri, and saturday morning.

2 ideas: or call a cab (065551 - 064994) when you parked the car, asking for a big one (like Multipla Fiat), or you can ask a cab's driver (Taxis are available on your way - P.zza Pio XI, just in front of a supermarket SMA - Right hand side, 5 mns from carpark) to follow you in the car park.

I hope you will manage!!
Michelle

Catherine, here's another idea. Think about driving to Oriveto and leaving your car there for the three days you'll be in Rome. The parking lot near the duomo is attended and would probably be less expensive and less hassle than trying to drive to the garage in Rome. You could leave most of your luggage in the trunk and take only what you would need for the three days in Rome. Take the train to Rome (about one hour, no connections). Get to Rome earlier than your daughters expected arrival and take the train out to the airport to meet them or have them meet you at your hotel.

Have no idea if this will work with your itinerary, but the idea of taking a car into Rome for three days seems overwhelming to me. If you decide to do this I could recommend a hotel in Orvieto that we used on two trips.

Buon viaggio

Our hotel directed us to a lot near the Trevi Fountain, walkable to Campo di Fiori. I'm sorry I can't remember the name and exact address. It was about $20-25/day (March 2001). Driving in the historic district in Rome is horrible. If for an additional fee you can arrange with the hotel to park the car for you, it's worth it. We did that in FLorence. Our Rome hotel helped us hail a taxi to follow to the garage so we didn't get lost.

From a previous thread:

Parking car in Rome

Author: ann ([email protected])
Date: 06/23/2002, 07:05 am

Message: I need to leave my rental car for three days in Rome (middle of the three week trip so I can't drop it off). Searching this board I found suggestions as to parking at the Villa Borghese underground lot (thanks Cheryl, Rex, etc). My question is - does anyone know exactly how to get there from the ring road. I'll be coming from Perugia? Also, on the maps there appear to be at least three or four "P" signs for the Borghese gardens. Is one lot better than the others, does it matter, and if so, which one do I want? I know lots of you have driven and parked in Rome. I need some good advice and moral support here. Thanks

----------------------------------------

Author: Rex ([email protected])
Date: 06/23/2002, 10:21 am

Message: Even though I recommended the Borghese underground car park, I agree that the first place you should try is the car park that your hotel recommends. For example, at Cesari, they will direct you to a place called Autorimessa (sp?) Trevi, less than 300 yards (on foot, walking back) from the front door of the hotel.

I recommended Borghese for anyone with a big van. The Trevi place isn't tall enough for a big van.

Best wishes,

Rex
The only thing you forgot to mentioned, Rex, is the price you will pay in any car park down town (Car park = autorimessa = $25/30/day).

Parking Gianicolo is probably the best place where to put your car without spending a fortune!

Au revoir,
Michelle
Hi. If you're American or a very defensive driver, forget about driving in Rome. It's a survival of the fittest and very stressing, if you don't have the right mentality.
For an itinerary to get to Villa Borghese parking lot or any other check: www.mappy.com or http://www.shellgeostar.com/share/.
