Rome next weekend-where shall we go for my daughter's 21st birthday meal and still be able to pay her tuition?
My daughter is spending her semester abroad in Sicily but is going to meet me next weekend in Rome for a 3 day weekend-just the girls. Does anyone have a unique restaurant that they would recommend for a special event like a 21st birthday? I seem to always go to the same restaurants over there when I am over for work so want something different. My daughter and I are open to any type of food but don't want it soooooo expensive that I cannot afford her tuition next semester. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks-

Dutyfree - Can you give us some ideas of places you're already been so we don't repeat ourselves? We all understand about splurges for special occassions, but if you could also give us an idea of your price range it might help as well. Thanks.

I layover in Rome periodically each month and I seem to go to the same restaurants in the usual areas so that is why I would love to hear about ones in different parts of Rome.I usually am around the Via Veneto,Republicca,Spanish Steps and Navona areas so if someone has hit upon something different I would be most appreciative. Remember-I am constantly in jet lag when I am there so I don't always go as far as regular tourists would on a trip.

I guess if she's 21 it might be fun to have dinner in Trastevere. Il Ciack has good food--heavy on the meat, though, so if you're both vegetarians it won't work. They keep a cat (or two?) in the restaurant, so if that's icky to you...
I guess I'm recommending it because we found it convivial and festive somehow, although I wouldn't say it's "unique." Maybe because at the end of the meal the put down a bottle of grappa and a bottle of limoncello and let you go to town?

I have seen people recommending that restaurant-where is it located over there. I usually take the electric tram across the river to Standa or Orviesse for shopping so is it off a side street? The daughter has bad allergies to cats but maybe the wine will ward off an attack??? Would I need reservations on a weekend? Thanks!

My husband and I were in Rome a little over a year ago for our annaversary, and we got restaurant reccomendations from a Roman that lives in New York. My favorites: Matricianella on Via Del Leone, 4. It was so great we went twice for lunch. It's not fancy, but great rustic atmosphere, and not very expensive. And just to let you know, I am VERY particular with restaurants. I like great food that's not too over the top, with a great atmosphere and places that seem really authentic. We also loved La Rosetta, which is known as the best seafood restaurant in Rome, and it was expensive, but absolutely delicious. Departures magazine did an entire issue devoted to Italy before we went. I would see if you could get a copy of it because it's full of great places.

Oh, I wouldn't bother if she's allergic to cats; it was kind of catty when we were there. I'm sure others will have better suggestions.
Here's the ristoroma page for Ciack just in case you're ever interested in going without your daughter.

I would suggest Pierluigi. We loved it. Here is their English web site:

We wanted reservations at Pierluigi a couple of weeks ago. It was high on my list and our tour guide LIT UP when I mentioned it. Both the hotel and the tour guide called, but got a phone message, something about they've moved. Check it out before going and nail down the location. I wish we'd had time to do so.
We also ate at Matricianella and agree the food was excellent. But I don't think it's quite the "festive" atmosphere she's described.
Two of our favorites were Fiametta (near Pza Navona) and La Sagristia (near Pantheon). For atmospher, I'd probably say Fiametta...a fun place. And the food was divine. We had pizza and spinach crepe for our primis...I still dream about that crepe!

This is one of my favorite places in Rome for a very nice meal, but not over the top. When you order a pasta/risotto dish, your dining partner gets a small dish of what you order so you don't have to ask for a taste!

One of our favorites (though we haven't been back to Rome in a while) was the Ambasciata d' Abruzzo:

Thanks to all of you for providing me with some possibilities for celebrating her big day! If anyone else has any special places to visit or dine that they would like to share-that would be great! Just wish that my knee that I screwed up last night felt better as now I am having problems walking..........always something!
