FYI, the last Leonardo Express train from Fiumicino Airport to Termini departs at 23:38. I think you should consider the possibility you'll have to take a taxi into the city.

Although I've never travelled through Termini at that time of night, I believe the station would be safe. Just use your head.

I hope someone can help with your lodging question because I think the reception desks at most budget accommodations are not open late at night. It would help if you told us (in currency terms) what your idea of "budget" means.

What time of year and what day of the week is your arrival? Where are you flying to Rome from?

We do not think that flight will be so late that it will be past 23:00 hrs at Fumicino. If it is very late then obviously we would consider spending night in some hotel close to Airport or else spend night at airport and travel in early hours to Termini.

Easyjet have a pretty good record on punctuality - for one thing, their strict enforcement of denying boarding to latecomers helps prevent delays. It would be surprising if you were seriously delayed.

You are arriving on a domestic flight, so there will be no immigration checks to go through. IME the biggest delay at FCO is the baggage reclaim, which is one of the worst performers in Europe - waits of 30 minutes at the carousel are not uncommon. Depending on which gate you come in on (I've no personal experience of Easyjet at FCO), the walk to the Leonardo Express train can take up to 15 to 20 minutes. The trains only run every 30 minutes, so you may have some additional delay if you just miss one. Having said all that, with a scheduled arrival time of 21:15, you should be fine for getting the train into Termini, arriving at between 22:30 and 23:00.

There are dozens of cheap (though not always nice) hotels and B&B's in the streets immediately around Termini. I'm afraid I have no personal knowledge of the check-in policies of these properties, but in your case I'd try to go for the largest hotel possible as they are more likely to have 24h reception - do check of course though!

The Termini area is scruffy and a bit sleazy (as is the case for most station localities in Europe), and you'll need to apply reasonable precautions late at night against petty theft, con merchants etc. There will be plenty of people still about (mostly large groups of teenagers, and other budget tourists) even at this time of night though.

Finding hotels can be slightly difficult because sometimes a single building may have more than one hotel on different floors.

The area is indeed slightly scruffy but the prices and certainly the location are excellent, and you can always find another hotel for subsequent nights in a different part of the city, but it was fine for the for the five nights we spent there.

What time of year? Malpensa is subject to dense fog at certain times of the year, and delays or even closure of the airport are possible.

in your circumstances, I think that I would consider booking a car service to take me straight to a hotel somewhere in the centre that I wanted to stay in, not necessarily in fact probably not] anywhere near Termini.

hotels for €100 may not be that easy to find - I suggest that you put your dates into a site like booking.com or venere.com and see what comes up. obviously somewhere that has 24 hour reception will be essential.

Annhig - that won't be a problem, there really are loads of cheap (<€100) hotels in Rome. As I indicated, many of them are very basic indeed, but they are there. We don't know yet when the OP is traveling, but I did run a quick check on hotels.com for a weekend in June just to confirm this.

Gordon, I think that if I were the OP arriving late, I'd like to be met by someone that I'd already made contact with, and who knew where I was going, rather than take my chances with taxi-drivers who may or may not put their meter on.

and I'd like to think that the OP can manage to find something that is better than basic, which is why I suggested the hotel consolidators who are running quite good offers at the moment.

and they offer good cancellation terms which means that you can book somewhere as a 'banker" while you look for something better/cheaper.
