I've only been to one hostel in Rome which is called the Pink Floyd Hostel. It's a little bit on the outskirts but they'll cool you lunch each day for a few Euros and the staff was really cool.
Good luck!

And I highly recommend The Beehive, also near the Termini train station, but not in a dodgy part at all. My best friend and I (both female) stayed there in 2005, and it's great. Here's the website: http://www.the-beehive.com/.
