Rome: Help with a short stay!

Hello Fodorites! I posted earlier on this forum when we were in the early planning stages of this upcoming trip to Italy in late August - to mid Sept. I figured I had to get some logistics ironed out before getting back on this wonderful site. Who needs TA's when the best in the world are here. My question is regarding Rome. We are flying into FCO on August 26 around 12 noon, and staying there until the 28th. It's a short visit, but just wondering given the time restriction, where would the best place to stay (area) to be able to get to the major attractions. We would like to take a tour of the city so we can get a sence of Rome and it's attractions. What would be a good tour to take.
We know this is a flying trip, but no more time can be alloted, due to rental weekly locations in the Amalfi Coast, then Tuscany. We will be going to Venice at the tail end for a couple of nights then flying out of Rome to Toronto.
Thanks again, Fodorites!!
Cathy

Personally I would stay around Piazza Navona/Campo dei Fiori. You might want to check out the Hotel Portughesi.

In Oct. 2007, I stayed at the Hotel Isa at Via Cicerone, 39 and found that it was walking distance to the Vatican, Ponte Sant'Angelo and Castel Sant' Angelo. The Metro station was about 2 blocks and only 2 or three stops to the Colesseum. The hotel staff was very accommodating with directions and recommendations for restaurants. Because the hotel was under renovations from the top down at that time, I requested for a room above the 3rd floor. A spectacular breakfast buffet was included with our reservation. I got tickets to the Necropolis under the Basilica; search this site for St. Peter's Necropolis Scavi Tours and check for times of tours in english. I arranged for a tour of the Vatican with Presto Tours, www.prestotours.com or www.Vatican-tours.com who also have other options. If you need car service, I used www.romashuttle.com, who, if I remember correctly have city tours. Some time has passed since I vacationed in Rome, so do your homework and research what works for you. Hope this will help.

We had the same amount of time in Rome in September; although it was our second trip we didn’t make the most of it last time. It was the end of a long trip and we were a bit burnt out.

This time we stayed near Campo dei Fiori in the apartment below, and it was a fantastic location.

If you click on my screen name and go to my trip report (its long) and go to the feb 15 instalment you can can read how we managed to see the highlights in a very relaxed mode.

Good Luck

Doh... Thanks so much! I will def check out that area and the hotel!! There are six of us travelling together, and I will share this with them.

Metro1, so good of you to give me those sites and ideas. I have a pretty good map (Streetsmart) of Rome, but still you feel like you are travelling blind. I told my husband that Rome is making Paris seem like a stroll in the country!! Thank god we won't be driving at this point! I will be doing alot of research now that we have our trip finalized. Thanks again!!

Aussie..thanks for the TR. I will read it for sure!! Take care and I'll be back in touch.

You are all so willing to send wonderful info to perfect strangers. Again, thanks Fodorite family!!

If there are six of you travelling together I would definitely consider an apartment over a hotel. If you poke around here (or go check out slowtrav.com) you will find lots of good info. on apts.

I just logged in before going to work. Thanks, I will check that out. That would be ideal, but I just assumed that apartments wouldn't be available for such a short stay. Thanks again!

I think you may have difficulty finding an apartment for only two nights, but it may be possible. I agree with others it would be good to try to find a hotel or apartment near the Piazza Navonna. That way you could explore a lot of the interesting sites (P. Navonna, Campo de' Fiori, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish steps) by foot on your first day/evening.

For your second day you might find it more relaxing to choose between the major Roman ruins (Forum, Colosseum, Palatine Hill) and the Vatican area (St. Peters and the museums). I am not sure whether there are any tours that combine the two areas. There is a hop on-hop off bus

It will be very hot in August--an excuse for gelato stops

qwovadis,
What is the proccess to bid specifically on the Sheraton Roma?
We(I need to bid on two rooms) need to stay close to the airport on our last night out but I was hesitant to bid I thought there were several 4*hotels in Rome south and I believe that is the area I need to stay in.
Any advice or tips would be much appreciated! Thanks!
