Hi all,

We have been to Rome before and seen the normal touristy sights...

We wanted to do a day trip outside of Rome-- we will not have a car but hire a car service.

Does anyone have any great suggestions on places to go and if so, what service they might have used...??? Even if you drove it yourself, tel me and I can work around that.

I just want to get off the beaten path...

I've gone by train to Orvieto and to Florence. In the other direction, you can travel to Naples

You could have a car take you to Gandolfo, Frascati or any of the other "castelli Romani" towns.

The only car service I've used is Limo Service Rome and they were great.

You can easily go to Ostia Antica for the day by taking the train. It's just half an hour outside of Rome. It's the ancient sea port. Nice and shady, a really great day trip. You can also go to Pompeii for the day. This is also another easy, but long, day trip to take from Rome. You can easily get to Naples on the train then just change to the commuter train to get to the site. Takes about 2 hours.

andy, first of all, the "normal touristy sights" of Rome are... touristy, in the first place. They're not Rome's best sights - there are dozens of others that nobody ever visits and that are definitely as good as the "normal touristy" ones. So if you want to get off the beaten path, Rome is certainly the best place to do so.
Second, Rome is a terrible starting point for daytrips if you use a car or a bus - they will be stuck in traffic going both out of and back into town, and you'll lose precious time. The train, OTOH, won't perhaps bring you to off-the-beaten-path locations.
Third, the trip destinations already suggested... Florence and Orvieto are certainly not off-the-beaten-path, and also too distant to make for a reasonable daytrip (Florence, above all, which needs five days to be explored - that's a daytrip from Rome????). Pompeii, off the beaten path? And way too distant, as well (way not enough time for that huge site if you have to arrive from Rome the same morning!!). Ostia Antica is an obvious choice, and the only really excellent choice from Rome as far as travel time - plus it gets surprisingly few visitors. Another obvious choice is Tivoli, but that's not off the beaten path, on the contrary. Palestrina is, and makes sense as a daytrip from Rome... but I repeat, daytripping from Rome is not the best of all ideas. If you want to see some parts of Lazio (which is very rewarding), I suggest to leave Rome, stay somewhere in the countryside, and explore with a car: Palestrina, Subiaco, Tivoli, Fossanova, Cori, Ninfa (if you go at the right time of year), Segni, Alatri, Anagni, Arpino, Ferentino, Aquino, Gaeta, Sperlonga, Terracina... or north of Rome: Cerveteri, Tarquinia, Tuscania, Sutri, Civita Castellana, Castel S. Elia, Viterbo, Bagnaia, Bomarzo, Montefiascone, Bolsena, Acquapendente, Civita di Bagnoregio... all but Tivoli, Tarquinia and Civita di Bagnoregio are definitely off the beaten track. Way off.

Take the train to Orvieto (one hour, non stop), have lunch at I Sette Consoli (memorable), visit the duomo, walk the main street shopping. My favorite.

since I have hit the touristy places in Romne, what do u suggest as something fun and different?

I will be coming OFF a cruise ship, having stopped at Positano and the Amalfi coast and also at Florence.
Have been to Florence, Pompeii,Naples before..just wanted do something different.

SO help me out of funky things to do in Rome and some terrifics NON touristy restaurants...
