Rome day tour to Pompeii, Vatican guide
Me again, but I thought a separate posting would be easier. We are interested in a family day trip from Rome to Pompeii. I've seen fabulous sounding private vans, but it is very expensive. Any recommendations on an organized day tour? Stopping on the Amalfi coast would be welcome as well.
Next, would you recommend looking for a Vatican guide in advance or just showing up? How do you know if a guide is legitimate?
Thanks again in advance.

We just returned from Rome and I would highly recommend a tour of the Vatican area. It is very overwhelming and IMO a tour is the way to go.
I would highly recommend a tour with "Through Eternity Tours" They have a web site and their tour was great and the price was right. Enjoy!

Carol - There are several companies which run bus tours from Rome to Pompei - Vastours, Appianline, Carrani, Greenline, American Express ...
VASTOURS (Tour 13)
www.romeguide.it/vastours/
CARRANI (Tour 13)
http://www.italyguide.com/TURISMO/ca...italiabis.html
APPIAN (Tour 14)
http://www.italyguide.com/TURISMO/ap...ur_italia.html
GREENLINE (Tour15)
(excludes Sorrento)
www.romeguide.it/greenline/greenline_eng.htm
However, none of these include the Amalfi Coast.
A common problem with these tours is that they don't allow enough time at Pompei (- usually only about 2 hours).
They usually include a cameo factory visit en route, and you don't get to Pompei till after lunch.
Some may include a short 30 min. stop in Sorrento before returning to Rome.
It's all a bit rushed IMO - and not cheap at approx. €100 pp.
..................
Alternatively you can do it rather more cheaply by public transport.
TRAIN
- If you go by TRAIN, with an early start you can be at Pompei by 9.00- 10.00.
Take the train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, then the Circumvesuviana train to POMPEI SCAVI.
For timetables see:
www.trenitalia.it (Rome-Naples trains)
www.massalubrense.it/circum.htm (Circumvesuviana)
[You could include Sorrento too - it's only 30 mins by train from Pompei].
BUS
- There are SHUTTLE BUSES from Rome in high season run by MAROZZI (approx. €30.00 and by ENJOY ROME (€45-55)
www.marozzivt.it/HomePage.htm
www.enjoyrome.com/shuttle_tour/pompeii.html
The MAROZZI Rome-Pompei-Sorrento shuttle service runs in summer, leaving Rome at 07.00(- deps. from outside Tiburtina station), arriving Pompei about 10.00.
The return Marozzi bus leaves Sorrento approx. 18.00 and Pompei approx. 18.45, arriving Rome about 21.00.
The ENJOY ROME Pompei shuttle returns to Rome earlier - for details see the above link
......................
If you want to visit the Amalfi Coast as well as Pompei you can do this by public transport but not by tour bus.
You'd need to make an early start and plan carefully around hydrofoil, ferry and/or bus timetables.
Hope this helps ...

Thanks for your responses. I've printed it out and will check into pricing and logistics. I forgot to add that we're going in Feb. (at at time when the Amalfi coast isn't exactly a popular destination!)
