Rome Ciampino airport and transportation for an unsavvy traveler

If anyone could help me with this...I would appreciate it....my son is traveling into the Rome Ciampino airport next week. He was to have been traveling with 2 other buddies....but instead they have a flight into fiumicino. His flight arrives 4 hours ahead of his friends. What would be the best way for him to make his way to his lodging near Via Pietro Roselli from Rome Ciampino. He knows little Italian and is not particularly worldly, but will learn in a hurry. Any advice I can offer him would be of help.

I live nearCiampino and here is some info I had given some months ago for a similar question:
"If you arrive in Ciampino the only way to reach the city centre apart from taking a cab, is to take the so called COTRAL blue bus which stops not really in front of the Airport but 5 minutes' walking distance from there. This is the bus that goes along the Via Appia and which connectes the surrounding towns like Frascati, Genzano, Ariccia, Velletri, Latina, to Rome Anagnina subway stop going towards Rome centre.
There is also another COTRAL bus that less frequently connects Ciampino airport to Roma Anagnina, but this comes from Ciampino town centre. The more frequent buses are the ones connecting the surrounding towns (one every 30 minutes or so, much less frequent on sundays).
Fiumicino is MUCH better connected and closer to the attractions in Rome. Just take the Leonardo Express which will take you to Termini rail station from where you can go anywhere in Rome".

I remember to have posted another long description in one of my past answers. I will go and look for it and I will copy + paste it here so it will be easier for you to get the info you require! see ya later!

SUE: HERE IS THE INFO I HAD GIVEN SOME MONTHS AGO!!!! I GUESS THAT NOW YOU HAVE IT ALL!

Message: I am a local (lived in Genzano which is 20 km from Ciampino) so this is the info I can give you: once you get out of Ciampino airport walk straight ahead of you for about 200 metres (passing the parking lot and walking along the entrance road of the airport). You will reach a very trafficated street which is Via Appia. There is a police cabin (you can ask them to show you where the bus station is), and a little bit furhter, on the same side walk, there is the COTRAL bus stop (dont cross the Appia because the bus station across the street leads towards Velletri or Latina NOT to Rome). Every 20 minutes or so (depending on the day, on sunday it is about every 45-50 minutes) there is a BLUE COTRALBUS that goes to ROMA ANAGNINA (coming from LAtina or Velletri, but it is irrelevant what the origin is). The ride is about 10 minutes. Note: you must purchase a ticket before getting on the bus. It costs about 75 euro cents. There must be a tobacconist in the Airport somewhere where you can get it. If you have a lot of baggages it could be a problem to step on the bus especially if it is in the morning when lots of people use the cotral bus to go to Rome to work. It is an easy ride though.
Second option, there should be another COTRAL vus that goes from Ciampino town through the airport and also going to Anagnina, but I am not that sure about where the stop is (if right in front of the airport or farther awazy where the other bus stop is).

Message: oops I forgot to say that once you step off the bus in Anagnina (which is the terminal stop) you must go DOWN (just follow the people that go down the stairs), purchase a ticket either at the newsagent or at the ticket machine (you should have coins in that case, I prefer the newsagent where you can also get a map of Rome if you want). Just follow the flow of people going towards the METRO entrance. From there on....it is your choice where to go, but the only line you can get from Anagnina station is line A DIREZIONE BATTISTINI.
BEWARE OF PICKPOCKETS IN THE UNDERGROUND or while clustering around the entrance door of the train...

As Batuffolina said, there's a bus service connecting the airport to Ciampino village Railway Station (15 minutes to Termini) and to the terminal of the underground-line A (20 minutes to Termini).
Buy tickets for this service, operated by COTRAL, at the newsstand inside the arrival hall.
If you have heavy luggage or if you want to get rid of those all "buy ticket before boarding" and "upstairs/downstairs" you may strongly consider to use the direct service operated by Terravision which links the Airport to Termini (front of Royal Santina Hotel- Via Marsala) for 8€.
Ticket for this service are sold at the arrival hall.

Topping because of some update.
The bus service between Ciampino Airport and Anagnina Metro Station, in Rome, is now operated by "Schiaffini Travel" on behalf of the regional transport company.
Tickets (1 euro) can be bought on board, now.
New timetables on : http://www.schiaffini.it/AlPercorren...Sub=66&p=1

Departures are : at Anagnina Metro Station bus terminal from platform 1;
at Ciampino Town Railway Staion (20 minutes after Anagnina) just outside the station building;
and in front of the arrival hall at the Airport.
Hope this helps
Luca

With a taxi, consider about 50 euros. Ciampino (though just a few kilometres from the borders of Rome, delimited by the GRA) is considered by some taxi drivers as being outside Rome so the fare is higher (I lived in Genzano and a taxi ride from there to Fiumicino airport was 60 euros, pre-agreed fare with my usual taxi driver). Depending on the congestion on the GRA (grande Raccordo Anulare, the belt around Rome) it should take from 30 minutes to an hour!

Luca:
Schiaffini is a privately operated bus company (one of my friends works for this company in Ciampino, they have lots of buses also used for private coach tours, school trips, business transfers etc).
The one I mentioned is COTRAL which is the regular bus service operating in Lazio (COTRAL= Compagnia Trasporti LAziali). Good to know, though, that Schiaffini has this service too.

Batuffolina,
It seems that Cotral Company tendered the "Ciampino Airport/Anagnina Metro" route, which is now operated only by Schiaffini on their behalf.
You can use your Metrebus travelcard (valid for zone B) but you have to buy single journey tickets by the driver.
Same service, different timetable.

I'm leaving to Stockholm next Friday and I'm thinking to make use of the service we are talking about on my way to the airport and take the Terravision service when back.
