Rome Bus System

We are getting ready for an upcoming trip to Europe, which includes Rome. Part of the trip prep is going thru all of our previous trips' info. As always, I will take my info on how to use Rome's bus system. We are suburbanites & never use the public bus system. So, what may seem obviously easy to some, was very confusing for us. Also we are too frugal to take the HoHo bus or taxi everywhere, just because we don't want to prepare ourselves, or take ourselves out of our comfort zone.

Therefore, I thought that just in case this info is helpful to anyone else, I'll post it here. I previously posted this in 2007, but when Fodor's software (or whatever) changed, it was eliminated (at least I haven't been able to find it). We did not use the bus system last fall because we stayed near the Barberini metro stop (so convenient!). However, this year we are again staying next to P.Navona, so we will mostly use the buses. I'm sure the ticket prices are very out of date - 2007.

Pickpockets on buses is not a problem for us. We never saw or experienced such & such happens in every major city around the world. In my opinion, pickpockets are not a problem - unprepared travelers are.

I hope the lengthy detail of my info will not discourage anyone from taking the buses. I am detail oriented by nature. If my instructions are used, once the bus map, schedule, & bus stops sign are viewed, it all becomes clear.

I'll be happy to try & answer any questions.

Julie

My document info begins here -

INFO ITEMS -
MAGNIFYING GLASS (or superhero eyes) is a must for reading the bus route map - teeny tiny letters are often even more difficult to read because street indicator lines are running thru them.

HILITER PEN for marking bus stops on the route map

#116 mini-bus – Navona, Vatican, Via Veneto, Campo dei Fiori; lots of stops so very slow, but good for avoiding the busier large buses;

SCHEDULE, & ROUTE MAP are needed - at a newsstand, E6 in 2007.

TICKETS (2007 prices) - a 75 minute bus ticket (BIT) is E1 (buy at newsstands or tobacco shops); a 24 hour/daily pass (BIG) is E4 (not sure if newsstands or tobacco shops sell this); a 3 day pass (BTI) is E11; a weekly pass (CIS) is E16 (tobacco shops; not newsstands). All of these tickets can be used on the buses, metro, & the train that goes to Ostia Antica.

FERMATA / STOP - “Fermata” is Italian for stop.

BOARDING & EXITING - I believe passengers are supposed to board via the front door & exit via the back door. However, if your easiest boarding is via the back door, do so. Exiting from each door has its perils. If trying to exit via the front door & there are lots of oncoming passengers, the door may close before you get out. If trying to exit via the back door, the driver may not ensure everyone has exited before closing the door. Therefore, the best system is to recognize the stop before your stop & have your group ready to exit.

STAMPING the TICKET - As soon as boarding & in the yellow machine on the bus (usually one at front & one in the middle). Insert the ticket, the machine will eat it, & then spit it out with the stamped time. If that doesn’t happen, need to turn the ticket over before inserting. Note: Only need to stamp the multi-day tickets the first time.

YOUR BUS STOP - Notate or memorize the name of your bus stop (especially if you have several stops near you). Remember landmarks, so your stop will be familiar as you approach it. Remember which direction to go when you get off of the bus at your bus stop. Use landmarks in case you get off on the other side of the street.

"OWL" & "E" on Bus Stop Signs - If at owl is at the top of a bus #, it is a night service bus only; an E is express (less stops, so be sure it stops where you want).

ROUTE CIRCLING - The buses do not always keep circling their route; some routes end & everyone must get off. That is not a problem with proper advance planning, as outlined below.

IMPORTANT - WHAT to do if travelers get SEPARATED - (1) Before the bus ride, decide what to do if separated, such as, the one left on the bus should get off at the next stop & stay there. The person who got off first, should walk to the other person. Or vice versa. (2) Each person needs to carry their own itinerary with lodging name, address, & phone #, and have cash for a cab/bus/metro, & a room key.

RUSH HOUR - AVOID! Not only for yourself, but have pity on locals trying to get to & from work & home.

HOW to PLAN a BUS TRIP -
1. ROUTE MAP, BUS SCHEDULE, & HILITER PEN - Begin by hiliting your bus stop (one closest to your hotel/apartment) on the bus route MAP. Then find your desired destination & hilite it.

NOTE: Sometimes, a tourist spot may not be identified on the bus map. So if not, just use your tourist map, compare the site location to the bus map, & hilite where it should be.

NOTE: The names on the bus stop signs & in the bus schedule are bus stop names & they are usually STREET names. Of course, some streets have more than one bus stop, so be sure to hilite the correct stop or you will walk further .

2. HERE to THERE MATCH - (1)Look for a matching bus # at your stop & your destination stop. (2)List (have pen & paper handy) all of the bus #’s at your destination stop. (3)List the street name for your destination stop. (4)If you do not find a match, check for nearby stops. The bus map will show all of the bus stops near you & near your destination. Keep checking each for a match (may be more helpful to make a list of the involved #’s). If you do not find a match, you will need to transfer (see #3 below).

NOTE: Also note the name of the bus stop just before your destination, so you can get ready in advance to disembark.

NOTE: Sometimes, there are more or less stops than listed on the signs, so counting the stops does not work. Probably the drivers don't stop when no one has indicated they want off & no one is standing on the curb to get on. So to catch a bus, stand near the sidewalk bus sign & near the curb edge of the sidewalk to indicate your desire to board. Once on board, notice the red buttons on many of the poles (the ones from floor to ceiling that one can hold onto when standing). After pulling away from the stop before your destination, push that red button so the driver will be sure to stop at your stop. May not always be necessary, but can’t hurt.

3. TRANSFER to TERMINI - If there is not any from "Here to There" match - (1) take a bus from your stop to Termini (Rome's bus station). Just find the bus #’s at your stop by looking for them in the bus schedule, on the bus map, and/or from your bus stop signs. Listed next to your bus # in the schedule book will be all of the stops for that bus – look for Termini. (2) Or, you can look for a transfer at a connecting bus stop rather than going to Termini.

TERMINI - There are lanes of buses, all heading in the same direction. There are signs in the lanes that list the #'s of the buses that come into each lane, or help can be obtained at the Info/Ticket booth. The info booth is at the front of one of the lanes.

4. SCHEDULE & ROUTE MAP vs. BUS STOP SIGN - The schedule & route map may conflict with a bus stop sign. At the bus stop, check the sign against the route plan you have developed. If your planned bus # is not listed on the bus stop sign, wait & see if the bus actually does stop there, which means the sign is outdated (we never found that to be the case). Or, check the route map/schedule for a nearby bus stop that lists the bus you want.

5. UNPLANNED TRIP - (1) If you know the bus # to take or the bus stop name of where you are going, no problem. Just go to the nearest bus stop & see if the bus sign indicates that the route will work. If not, see if there is another bus stop nearby and/or use your bus map for nearby stops. (2) If you don’t know the name of the bus stop where you are headed, find it on the bus map (find your destination, bus stop nearest to, & the name of the street for the bus stop). More info on how to use the bus schedule book is below.

6. BUS SCHEDULE - Can be as helpful as the bus map. (1) The front section lists bus #’s by public places/some tourist places. For instance, you want to go to the Coliseum & many bus #’s are listed for going there. See if any of those #’s match your bus stop. (2) 2nd section is a street listing. (3) The 3rd section is a listing of all of the bus #’s & all of the bus stops for each. This #3 section was the most useful for me. In the 3rd section, circle all of the buses at your bus stops. Then circle the bus stops for each of your planned siteseeing destinations, such as for the Ancient City, Via Veneto, etc. This saves some time.

7. WHICH SIDE of the STREET - On the signs at the bus stops, under each bus #, there will be a list of bus stop names. One of those bus stop names will be enclosed in a lined box (lines enclose the name). That is the name of the bus stop where you are standing. (1) Look for the name of the bus stop where you are headed. (2) If your destination bus stop is listed “above” the stop where you are standing, you need to cross the street & catch the bus over there (be sure to check that sign though). If your destination bus stop is listed “under” the stop where you are standing, you are on the correct side of the street.

8. WHERE to DISEMBARK - (1)Some of the buses have TV screens hanging from the ceiling (usually in the middle section of the bus). These screens sometimes display the next stop, the current stop, & sometimes list the remaining stops (by bus stop names). (2)Or, position yourself on the right side of the bus with an unblocked view of the upcoming bus stop signs (if standing, you may need to stoop down to see the signs). That way, each time the bus stops, you can view that bus stop’s name, which is listed at the top of each sidewalk bus sign. When the stop before yours is listed as the current stop (that's why you need to preplan & know the name of the stop before yours), after everyone has departed, head to the door. NOTE: Need to know the bus stop name just before your destination. NOTE: Sometimes, there are more or less stops than listed on the signs, so counting the stops does not work.

That's a lot of good information, Julie. Once you've cracked the public transport in any destination, life is so much more pleasant.

Thank you taking the time to post this.

Julie, I came back a few days ago. A couple of tips, on Sundays better have your tickets bought earlier most tobacconist are closed. Also in little 116 bus , a very useful bus that gets you around the little streets , the machine that they have inside in order to pay with an euro coin most of the time do not work. Just be prepared buying tickets before Sunday .
Also it happened to me that coming from the termi after a short train trip I got into H bus to go to Trastevere, but the machine that stamps the tickets inside the bus was not working,
What to do? A nun of all people who was inside the bus told me, WELL THIS IS ROME, as not to do anything. But a nice Italian lady sitting next to me told me, Signora write with a pen the date and time , the fine is 50 eu...you would not enjoy it...so now you know.
Also I tore by mistake a couple of tickets but I paste them back with scotch and used them
hand writing the time and day. No inspector but I guess it was going to be oK.
Having said this enjoy ROme it is a fabulous place, and people are very nice.
You guessed Sunday we rode for free on 116, what to do? But it is not ideal.

Thanks to everyone for your replies.

kybourbon, you found it; I couldn't!

Graziella5b, thanks for the new info.

Ron in Rome, how I wish I had found your website 2 years ago - would have saved me endless time & frustration "developing" my bus system! How generous of you to spend so much time offering a great & thorough explanation. The pictures make the explanations so much clearer.

I now recommend that everyone needing help on the transportation system simply go to Ron's website - all the answers are there!

Looking forward to our November visit to Rome, Julie

If you want, I put together a list of my favorite bus routes on my website.

When you click on a route, it will open up the ATAC page for that route, in the direction listed.

Julie,

Thanks so much for all the information! Like you, I'm really not familiar with public transportation, and I've never used it while in Rome - hopefully that will change next time.

Just a question - you mentioned that when you have the multi-day tickets you only need to stamp it once...so you don't need to stamp it on all your other bus rides?

Ron,

Thanks so much for your links! I've never used the metro in Rome and your instructions/pictures are fantastic.

>>so you don't need to stamp it on all your other bus rides?<<

The bus/metro pass is a paper card/ticket similar to a credit card with magnetic stripe on back. When entering the metro, you will have to put it in the turnstyle as your ticket. There is a place on the back to fill in your name and the start date of the pass. If you get the Roma Pass you will get the transportation pass which is paper and the museum pass which is plastic.

How great - so much good info on this subject! Thanks everyone. Even though we successfully conquered the Roman bus & metro system, now I know even more.

Anna1013, if you purchase a multiday ticket, it only needs to be stamped the first time you use it - on a bus or on the metro. So, once you use your ticket on a bus or metro, you do not need to put it into the stamping machine on any future bus ride.

However, as kybourbon posted, everytime you use the metro, you must place your ticket into the turnstyle so the turnstyle will open & allow you to proceed.

I hope more tourists start using the metro & buses. While in Rome, we always talk to so many who will not try - say it's too confusing. We found it opens up a whole new dimension to siteseeing. No need to pay for cabs & worry about cabbie ripoffs. Saves lots of wear & tear on our poor tourist feet, which allows us to extend our walking day. Gets us places faster so we can see & do more. And, we like the local feel of it - especially the people watching.

Happy & safe travels everyone, Julie

Wow, just what I needed for upcoming 5 night Rome stay. I have always found the bus system difficult to really understand, thus mostly walking everywhere...this will really help, thanks.

Hi.
Can I use BIT ticket to ride more than two buses in 100 minutes? Can I use the same bus number with this ticket?

Can I use BIG (24 hours ticket)ticket to ride buses and subways and trams in Rome in 24 hours range? If I validate the ticket for the first time on a bus at 07.00 today, can I use the bus again for tomorrow at 06.59? Do I still to validate the ticket every time I use the bus with BIG (24 hours ticket)?

Thank you in advance,
