Rome Bus Routes - a list

Hello all,

We have been wobbling Hamlet-like between planning a trip to Emilia Romagna or a trip to Machu Picchu (not joking)...but we have now wobbled back to our original plan to visit ER in the fall. More on that later.

Anyway, in rummaging through my old notes, preparing for our new, confirmed, solid ER trip, I came across my notes of handy bus routes in central Rome and thought they may be helpful to folks planning a trip there. (The references to "Hotel" in the notes point to our favorite little no-nonsense hotel ten minutes from Termini and one minute from the Via Nazionale, the Hotel Italia, Via Venezia 18.)

So here they are FWIW:

⇒from Hotel, Via Venezia 18 to Galleria Borghese, walk up Via Nazionale to Pizza della Republicca, take the “2 o’clock” angled street (Via L. Einaudi) which goes toward Termini, and about half a block on the far side (the church side) is the “Repubblica” stop. Take Bus 910 and get off at the 4th stop, PINCIANA/MUSEO BORGHESE. This is just beyond the entrance gate to the park. Walk back from the direction of the bus, on the Via Pinciana, about 100 feet. The entrance is on your right, it is the Viale dell’Uccelliera. Go one block and there it is on your right.

⇒from Galleria Borghese via Bus 80 to Palatine Hill entrance and Colosseum: leave the Galleria on the Viale dell’Uccellierra and retrace your steps left on the Via Pinciana back up to the bus stop (PINZIANA/MUSEO BORGHESE) and walk a little farther to Via Isonzo—turn right and go to your 4th street on the right and turn right onto Via Tevere. Walk down to 2nd street on your left and turn left at Via Aniene. Walk up to the first intersection (with Via Salaria) and go another half block (now Via Aniene has changed its name to Via Viterbo) and the fermata, PARTIGIANI FS, is on the north side of the street, which is to your left as you are walking. Take Bus 80 to COLOSSEO.

⇒from Galleria Borghese via Elettrico 116T to Chiostro di Bramante-Arco della Pace-near Piazza Navona: walk from Gallery down to southern end of gardens to Porta Pinciana, catch Bus 116T at fermata terminal GIANICOLO, go 14 stops to fermata ZANARDELLI. To get to the GIANICOLO terminal, go out Porta Pinciana—you are looking at the beginning of the Via Veneto. To the right, cross the Corso d’Italia and then at 2 o’clock, is the Via della Porta Pinciana. Walk down 200 feet and terminal is on the right side of the street.

⇒a very handy bus for the centro: Elettrico 116T:
• North: from our hotel stop, on Via Nazionale NAZIONALE/QUATTRO FONTANE: up 1st stop to BARBERINI, 2nd stop VENETO/EMILIA, 5th stop PORTA PINCIANA (south entrance to Borghese Gardens).
• Southwest to Centro (Note: this is longer, but thru winding old streets, than Bus 64): from south side of Via Nazionale, fermata NAZIONALE/QUATTRO FONTANE to 9th stop, ZANARDELLI. From here you can walk up and cross the Tiber and Castel Sant’Angelo is just to the west. From here, Piazza Navona is 2 blocks to the south; Pegno is just west of Navona. Via delle Coppelle is at northern tip of Navona and runs east. From ZANARDELLI go to the 4th stop, GIULIA/POLVERONE and you are at the Ponte Sisto—cross the Tiber and you are just at northern end of Trastevere.

⇒from Etruscan Museum (Villa Giulia) / Galleria di Arte Moderna (1/2 mile west of Borghese Gallery) to Colosseum: take Bus 3 outside the Modern Art museum at fermata GALLERIA ARTE MODERNA.

⇒from Hotel to Castel Sant’Angelo: take Bus 64 to fermata PONTE V. EMANUELE

⇒from Hotel to Colosseum and Palatine Hill entrance on Via de San Gregorio (just south of the Colosseum): walk to Via Nazionale, across the street is the fermata “NAZIONALE/QUATTRO FONTANE” for Bus 170—take it south for 3 stops to Piazza Venezia. Change to Bus 80 and get off at 2nd stop, COLOSSEO.

⇒from Hotel to Trastevere – Piazza Belli: go to Via Nazionale, walk south 1-1/2 blocks to the Palazzo delle Esposizioni and there is the fermata NAZIONALE/PALAZZO ESPOSIZIONE and take Bus H and get off at the 4th stop, SONNINO/S. GALLICANO, just south of Ponte Garibaldi. This is 150 feet from Piazza Belli.

⇒from Hotel to Borghese Gardens south entrance at Porta Pinciana: take Bus 116 at NAZIONALE/QUATTRO FONTANE

⇒from Hotel through centro area around Pantheon over to southern end of Piazza Navona, then all the way north up the Via Giulia then looping back down on the eastern bank of the Tiber on Lungotevere Sangallo, crossing Ponte Mazzini, then across the Tiber to northern edge of Gianicolo: Bus 116 at NAZIONALE/QUATTRO FONTANE.

⇒from Hotel to Tiber Island / Circo Massimo / Bocca della Verita / Trastevere: take Bus #170 at NAZIONALE/QUATTRO FONTANE to fermata Bocca della Verita. This bus goes down Via Nazionale, jogs up around the big square in front of Wedding Cake and loops back to Piazza Venezia (so it’s good for the Doria Pamphilj) and then down to Teatro Marcello and Bocca della Verita, crosses the Tiber on the Ponte Palatino (just south of Isola Tiberina) and touches the middle end of Trastevere, at the north end of the Lungotevere Ripa…and the Via Lungaretta begins just one block inland. This is a beautiful part of Trastevere, once you walk away from the big streets on the edge of the river.

I should have added even though they dropped the 116, 117 and 115 a few years ago, they have not updated their maps. They have updated the search so if you enter to search buss 116 route, you will discover it doesn't exist.

I don't understand why everyone is so resistant to using google maps public transport option which gives excellent and accurate information with all options....

Thanks for the update.

@vinoroma: not "resistant", rather lack of information on my part, information which you so kindly provided
